Kedarnath from Haridwar
- Guptkashi and Kedarnath stays
- Pick-up at Haridwar station
- Shortest complete plan
A focused pilgrimage to Baba Kedar, the highest of the twelve Jyotirlingas, planned around the 16 km walk from Gaurikund, a night beside the temple and an unhurried darshan at dawn.
Kedarnath sits at 3,583 m at the head of the Mandakini valley in Rudraprayag district, with the Kedar Dome and Bharatekhunta peaks rising straight behind the temple. No road reaches it. Every pilgrim either walks the 16 km path from Gaurikund, rides a pony or palki, or flies in on a shuttle helicopter. That one fact shapes the whole journey, and it is why a Kedarnath-only trip is planned differently from a road tour.
A dedicated Kedarnath yatra gives you something the longer circuits often cannot: time. Instead of rushing the trek to stay on a ten-day schedule, you spend a full night at the shrine, attend the evening aarti, and join the queue in the cold blue hour before sunrise. Families who later want more can extend to Badrinath on the Do Dham Yatra or go for the full Char Dham Yatra, but many pilgrims come back to Kedarnath alone, year after year.
The rates below are per person for four travellers sharing one private vehicle and twin or triple rooms. Couples travelling alone pay somewhat more per head because the car cost is split two ways; larger families sharing an Innova Crysta or Tempo Traveller usually come out close to the budget figure.

Estimated 2027 prices, starting from. Your final quote depends on travel dates, hotel category and group size. Helicopter tickets, pony, palki and the Sonprayag–Gaurikund jeep are paid separately.
This is the 3-night plan from Haridwar. If you start in Delhi, add a first night in Haridwar and, on the way back, we stop at Rudraprayag or Srinagar so the final drive to Delhi is manageable.
Your driver collects you from Haridwar after an early breakfast. The road follows the Ganga to Devprayag, then the Alaknanda to Rudraprayag, where you turn up the narrower Mandakini valley. Guptkashi, with its old Vishwanath temple, is your base tonight; sleep early because tomorrow starts before light.
Drive to Sonprayag, where private vehicles stop, and ride the shared jeep 5 km to Gaurikund. From here the stone path climbs past Jungle Chatti, Bhimbali and Linchauli to the temple, with ponies and palkis available at rates set by the local administration. Settle into your room, then attend the evening aarti as the bells echo off the valley walls.
Join the darshan line early, when the queue is shortest and the peaks catch the first sun. Walk up to the Bhairavnath temple, guardian of Kedarnath, and see the Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi behind the shrine. The descent is easier on the lungs but harder on the knees; reach Gaurikund by afternoon and drive back to your hotel.
Leave after breakfast and retrace the river road, with a tea stop at Rudraprayag where the Mandakini joins the Alaknanda. You reach Haridwar by late afternoon, in time for the Har Ki Pauri aarti or an evening train home. Guests on the Delhi plan continue to Delhi the next day.
| Night stop | Nights | Typical room rate | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guptkashi / Sitapur | 2 | ₹2,000–6,500 | Proper hotels with hot water and valley views |
| Kedarnath | 1 | ₹2,500–6,000 | Simple guest houses, cottages, tents and dorms; shared bathrooms are common |
Rooms at Kedarnath are limited and basic in every price band, so the difference between budget and luxury shows mainly at Guptkashi. If you want the full picture of what is available near the temple, read our Kedarnath hotel booking guide.
| Way up | Time from Gaurikund / helipad | Approximate cost | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| On foot | 6–9 hours up, 4–6 down | Free | Fit pilgrims who want the traditional yatra |
| Pony / mule | 4–5 hours | ₹3,000–4,000 one way | Most families and older travellers |
| Palki (carried chair) | 5–6 hours | ₹8,000–12,000 one way | Elders who cannot sit on a pony |
| Shuttle helicopter | About 10 minutes in the air | ₹6,500 round trip from Phata (2026) | Short schedules, limited mobility |
Pony and palki rates are fixed by the local administration and change each season, so treat these as a guide. Shuttle seats are sold only on the IRCTC HeliYatra portal (heliyatra.irctc.co.in) after you register for the yatra. We do not sell shuttle tickets, and you should ignore any website or social media page that claims to. Our IRCTC helicopter booking guide explains the steps, and we plan your road days around whatever seats you secure.
Want certainty instead of a booking window? A private charter from Dehradun covers Kedarnath in a single day; see Kedarnath helicopter from Dehradun.
The temple usually opens in late April or early May and closes on Bhai Dooj in November; after that Baba Kedar is worshipped at the Omkareshwar temple in Ukhimath. The 2027 opening date is announced at Ukhimath on Mahashivratri, and we post it on the opening dates page. For thinner crowds and clear skies, aim for late September or October. More on seasons in best time to visit.
Every pilgrim must register, free of cost, on registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in or the Tourist Care Uttarakhand app. Carry the QR slip and an Aadhaar or other photo ID; it is checked at Sonprayag. Step-by-step help is in our registration guide.
Three nights and four days from Haridwar or Rishikesh is the practical minimum with the trek, including a night at Kedarnath. From Delhi, allow four nights and five days. With confirmed shuttle tickets it can be shortened by a day.
Estimated from ₹8,500 per person from Haridwar and ₹10,500 from Delhi, for four people on budget hotels. Deluxe starts near ₹12,500 and luxury near ₹19,500 from Haridwar.
Not strictly, but it is strongly recommended. Doing 32 km of trekking plus darshan in one day is exhausting, and a night at the shrine lets you attend the evening aarti and a calm morning darshan.
No. Private vehicles stop at Sonprayag. A shared jeep runs the last 5 km to Gaurikund, where the trek starts. Our Kedarnath by car guide covers parking and road timings.
No. Shuttle tickets from Phata, Sersi and Guptkashi are sold only on IRCTC HeliYatra after registration. We guide you through it and adjust the itinerary to your flight date. Charter helicopters are a separate service we do arrange.
Many seniors complete the yatra by pony, palki or helicopter. Get a medical check-up, avoid the trek on foot if you have heart or lung conditions, and keep an extra day in hand.
Yes. Adding Badrinath turns it into the Kedarnath Badrinath tour, which takes 5 nights from Haridwar or 6 from Delhi.
