No train tickets and no airport queues: from the tricity, our car collects you at home and drives you to Kedarnath and Badrinath and back in seven days.
Chandigarh is one of the few big cities close enough to Uttarakhand for a pure road journey. Haridwar is roughly 200 km away through Yamunanagar, Saharanpur and Roorkee, about five to six hours of driving. That means a family in Sector 22, Mohali Phase 7 or Panchkula can load the boot at breakfast and be standing at Har Ki Pauri for the evening aarti, with no train or flight in between.
We plan the Do Dham from Chandigarh over 6 nights and 7 days. Night one is in Haridwar to break the trip, then the familiar mountain loop: Guptkashi, Kedarnath, Guptkashi, Badrinath and Srinagar Garhwal. On the last day the same car drives you straight home. Pilgrims from Ambala, Ludhiana and Jalandhar can be collected the same way, with an extra hour or two on each end.

Seven days from Chandigarh
Day 1
Chandigarh to Haridwar
About 200 km5–6 hoursNight: Haridwar
The car leaves your home mid-morning and heads south-east through Panchkula and the Yamunanagar plains. After crossing the Yamuna and passing Saharanpur and Roorkee, you reach Haridwar by afternoon. Check in, then walk to Har Ki Pauri for a holy dip and the evening aarti.
Day 2
Haridwar to Guptkashi
200 km7–8 hoursNight: Guptkashi
Today the real mountains begin. Past Rishikesh the road climbs into the Ganga gorge, with stops at Devprayag's confluence and Rudraprayag for lunch. Turn up the Mandakini valley to Guptkashi, the base for Kedarnath, and rest for an early start.
Day 3
Kedarnath trek
30 km drive + 16 km trekFull dayNight: Kedarnath
Drive to Sonprayag before sunrise, then the shared jeep to Gaurikund. The trail climbs 16 km to the shrine; ponies, palkis and pithoos are on hand, and IRCTC shuttle passengers fly from the helipad. Evening aarti at the temple is unforgettable in the cold mountain air.

Day 5
Guptkashi to Badrinath
200 km8–9 hoursNight: Badrinath
Cross to the Alaknanda valley through Ukhimath and the Chopta forests. The road descends to Chamoli and climbs past Joshimath to Badrinath. Bathe in the Tapt Kund and attend the evening aarti if you arrive in time.
Day 6
Badrinath, Mana and Srinagar
About 195 km7–8 hoursNight: Srinagar Garhwal
Take morning darshan of Badri Narayan, then drive to Mana village to see Vyas Gufa and Bhim Pul. In the afternoon, descend through Nandprayag, Karnaprayag and Rudraprayag to Srinagar Garhwal.
Day 7
Srinagar to Chandigarh
About 330 km9–10 hoursNight: Tour ends
Leave at first light and drive down via Devprayag, Rishikesh and Haridwar. After Roorkee the road returns to the plains through Saharanpur and Yamunanagar, reaching the tricity by evening. The car drops you at your door.
Driving your own car? Mountain roads beyond Rishikesh are narrow and landslide-prone. Most tricity families leave their car at home and let a local hill driver handle the bends.

Adding Hemkund Sahib
Many families from Punjab and Chandigarh want to pair Badrinath with Hemkund Sahib, the high-altitude gurdwara above Govindghat, which lies on the Badrinath road. It needs about two extra days: one to walk or ride to Ghangaria and one for the climb to the lake and back. The Govindghat–Ghangaria helicopter, when weather allows, costs about ₹4,500 one way. Read more on our Hemkund Sahib helicopter page or the longer Char Dham with Hemkund Sahib tour. Note that Hemkund Sahib usually opens later than the Char Dham temples, in late May or June.
Tips for Punjab and Haryana pilgrims
Best months: May and June are popular with school holidays; late September and October are clearer and quieter. Check the opening dates before fixing leave.
Weather swing: Chandigarh's summer heat and Kedarnath's freezing dawn are a week apart. Pack layers, a rain jacket and woollen socks.
Registration: every traveller needs the free yatra registration; it is checked at Sonprayag.
Helicopter: shuttle seats are sold only on IRCTC HeliYatra. Read how IRCTC booking works before the window opens.
Food: hotels serve vegetarian thalis; carry your own dry snacks for the trek.

Chandigarh Do Dham: FAQ
What is the road distance from the tricity to Kedarnath and Badrinath?
About 200 km to Haridwar and a further 230 km to Sonprayag, then the 5 km jeep ride and the 16 km trek. That is why we break the drive with a night at Haridwar.
Can you collect us from Mohali or Zirakpur?
Yes. Pick-up anywhere in Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula and Zirakpur is included. Towns further away, such as Ludhiana or Patiala, are quoted separately.
Is it cheaper to take a bus to Haridwar and join there?
Slightly. The Haridwar package starts at ₹13,500 per person versus ₹15,500 with home pick-up. Many families feel the door-to-door car is worth the difference, especially with elders and luggage.
Can we skip the Haridwar night?
It is possible, but Chandigarh to Guptkashi in one day is twelve hours or more on the road. We recommend keeping the Haridwar night for safety and comfort.
Is the Kedarnath helicopter possible on this trip?
Yes. If you secure IRCTC shuttle seats from Phata, Sersi or Guptkashi, we keep day 3 flexible so you fly up and down, and the rest of the plan stays the same. We cannot book shuttle seats for you, but we help you prepare for the booking window.
What vehicle will we get?
A Dzire or Ertiga for small budget groups, an Innova Crysta for Deluxe and Luxury or families of six, and a Tempo Traveller for ten to twelve people.
