Delhi – Kedarnath – Delhi
- Night at Kedarnath
- Srinagar Garhwal stop on return
- Fits a one-week leave
Vizag to Kedarnath is one of the longest pilgrim journeys in the country, from the Bay of Bengal to the head of the Mandakini. Here is how to make the distance work, and whether to add Badrinath while you are there.
Visakhapatnam lies roughly 1,800 km from Delhi by rail, a journey of well over a day, and Kedarnath is a further 460 km of road plus a 16 km trek beyond the capital. Pilgrims from Vizag and the coastal Andhra districts therefore face a real choice: give the trip enough days to arrive rested, or fly and compress the travel. Either way, the mountain part of the yatra stays the same.
We recommend most Vizag families fly to Delhi, direct or with a connection through Hyderabad or another hub, and begin our 4-night land package at the airport. Retired travellers with more time sometimes enjoy the train, breaking the journey with a night in Delhi before setting out. Whichever you choose, we pick you up in Delhi and handle every kilometre to Sonprayag and back, including hotels and a night at Kedarnath. You keep control of your long-distance tickets.
| Option | Approx. journey | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct flight to Delhi | About 2.5 hours | Fastest; start the yatra the same day | Limited direct frequencies |
| Connecting flight via Hyderabad or another hub | 4–6 hours | More timings to choose from | Longer travel day |
| Train to Delhi | About 30–36 hours | Economical for large families | Arrive tired; needs a rest night |
| Fly to Dehradun (connecting) | Varies | Skips the Delhi–Haridwar drive | Fewer, costlier seats |
If you land at Jolly Grant airport in Dehradun, use our Haridwar-start Kedarnath package and save a day each way. Our by air guide and by train guide cover general planning.
Because the journey from Vizag is long, many families ask whether to see more than Kedarnath while they are in Uttarakhand. Here is how the land packages compare from Delhi.

Fly in from Vizag and walk out to find your driver at the arrivals gate. The road north crosses the Ganga plain through Meerut and Roorkee, with a lunch break on the way. Haridwar's evening aarti at Har Ki Pauri is a fitting first evening on the yatra.
Mountains rise immediately beyond Rishikesh. The day's route climbs above the Ganga and Alaknanda gorges, pausing at Devprayag's confluence and at Rudraprayag, before turning up the Mandakini. At Guptkashi, the air is cool and the Chaukhamba peaks glow at sunset.
After an early breakfast, drive to Sonprayag and switch to the shared jeep for Gaurikund. The path climbs for most of the day; ponies and palkis can be hired at the start. You reach Kedarnath in time for the evening aarti and a warm dinner.
Pre-dawn darshan, a climb to Bhairavnath for those who want it, and then the long descent. Your driver waits at Sonprayag and takes you down to Srinagar Garhwal or Rudraprayag for the night.
Leave early to clear the hill section by midday, then follow the plains highway to Delhi. An overnight stay near the airport and a morning flight to Visakhapatnam is the safe choice, as weather or traffic can slow the day.
Kedarnath stays are simple guest houses and tents at about ₹2,500–6,000 a night; see the Kedarnath hotel guide.
About 1,800 km by rail to Delhi, then roughly 460 km by road to Sonprayag, a 5 km jeep ride and a 16 km trek to the temple.
