How Yamunotri stays work

Yamunotri, at 3,293 m, sits in a narrow gorge where the temple, the hot springs and a few stalls just about fit between the cliffs. Pilgrims walk or ride the 6 km path from Janki Chatti, take darshan and walk back the same day. That means your hotel is always down the valley, somewhere between Janki Chatti and the town of Barkot, about 45 km away.

The trade-off is simple. Barkot has the most hotels and the best facilities, but you face a 1.5–2 hour drive each way on the trek day. The villages closer to the trailhead (Syanachatti, Ranachatti, Hanuman Chatti, Janki Chatti and Kharsali) let you start walking at dawn, but rooms are fewer and simpler. Most Gangotri Yamunotri packages use two nights in Barkot; we switch to a closer village when the group prefers an early start.

Barkot

Barkot is a small market town on a terrace above the Yamuna, with views of the Bandarpunch range on clear days. Hotels range from simple to comfortable, with geysers, heaters on request and parking. It is also the junction for the road to Uttarkashi, so groups continuing to Gangotri usually stay here.

Syanachatti, Ranachatti and Hanuman Chatti

Syanachatti, Ranachatti and Hanuman Chatti line the last stretch of road above Barkot. Hanuman Chatti marks the confluence of the Hanuman Ganga and the Yamuna and was once the start of a much longer trek. Today they are useful middle-ground stops: closer to the trailhead than Barkot, with more rooms than Janki Chatti, and quiet once the day traffic leaves.

Janki Chatti and Kharsali

Janki Chatti is the roadhead: pony stands, palki counters, tea stalls and a cluster of guest houses. Across the river, the old village of Kharsali is where Goddess Yamuna is worshipped in winter at the village temple. Staying there is peaceful and atmospheric, though facilities are basic. On the Gangotri Yamunotri helicopter trip, Kharsali is the overnight stop.

  • Family rooms for four are easy to find in Barkot.
  • Meals: simple vegetarian food at all stops; packages include breakfast and dinner.
  • Heating: evenings in Barkot are mild; nearer the trailhead they are colder.
  • Parking is easier at Barkot and Syanachatti than at Janki Chatti.

Three ways to plan your Yamunotri nights

  1. Two nights in Barkot (standard). Arrive from Haridwar or Dehradun, do the trek on day 2 with an early drive to Janki Chatti, return to the same hotel. Best for elders and larger groups; used on the Char Dham from Haridwar.
  2. One night near the trailhead, one in Barkot. Drive straight to Syanachatti or Ranachatti, walk at dawn, and come down to Barkot after the trek. Shorter queues at the pony stand and a cooler climb.
  3. Kharsali stay. Spend a night in the winter-seat village for a quieter, more traditional experience. Good for pilgrims with time and a taste for village life.

Only doing Yamunotri? The Yamunotri yatra tour package is a 3N/4D trip from Haridwar from about ₹8,500 per person, with two nights in the Barkot area and a last night in Mussoorie or Dehradun.

Tips for the Yamunotri day

  • Leave Barkot by 6 am in season to reach Janki Chatti before the pony queue grows.
  • Ponies cost about ₹1,000–1,500 one way and palkis about ₹4,000–6,000; rates are fixed by the local administration and change each season.
  • The path is paved but steep in parts; wear good shoes and carry a rain jacket.
  • Carry your registration QR code; checks happen on the way.
  • Keep some cash; card machines and ATMs are rare above Barkot.

Yamunotri hotels: FAQ

Can I stay at the Yamunotri temple?

No. There are no regular hotels at the temple. Pilgrims stay between Barkot and Janki Chatti, or at Kharsali, and visit the temple as a day trek.

Is Barkot or Janki Chatti better for staying?

Barkot has more comfortable hotels; Janki Chatti and nearby villages let you start the trek earlier. Elders usually prefer Barkot.

How much do Yamunotri hotels cost?

About ₹1,500–4,500 per room per night in season, depending on category and location. These are estimates.

How far is Barkot from Yamunotri?

About 45 km by road to Janki Chatti (1.5–2 hours), then the 6 km walk to the temple.

What is Kharsali?

A village across the river from Janki Chatti where Goddess Yamuna is worshipped in winter. It has small lodges and homestay-style rooms.

Where should I stay if I continue to Gangotri after Yamunotri?

Barkot is the natural choice, because the road to Uttarkashi starts there. Stay two nights, do the trek in between, and drive about 100 km to Uttarkashi on the third morning; our Gangotri hotel guide covers the next stop.

Do hotels near Yamunotri have hot water?

Most do, either by geyser or bucket. Ask for heaters at the higher villages if you travel in May or October.

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes for May–June weekends and festival dates. September and October are easier.
