Kochi to the Himalaya is one of the longest pilgrim journeys in India, nearly the full length of the country. With a flight to Delhi and a well-paced road tour, it is far easier than it sounds.
Pilgrims from Ernakulam, Aluva, Thrissur and the rest of central Kerala travel further than almost anyone else to reach the Char Dham. The rail route to Delhi is about 2,700 km and takes more than two days, so nearly every Kochi family we plan for chooses to fly. A direct or one-stop flight from Kochi airport reaches Delhi in about three and a half hours, and the yatra starts the same day.
There are two ways to join. Land in Delhi and take our Char Dham package from Delhi, with a first night in Haridwar. Or fly on to Dehradun's Jolly Grant airport, usually with a connection, and start the shorter Dehradun tour. The mountain section is the same either way.

The Dehradun route looks cheaper, but compare the extra air fare to Dehradun with the two days saved. For seniors who cannot manage long drives, the helicopter Char Dham covers all four shrines in six days. Read Char Dham by air for more on flying in.

Why Kerala pilgrims feel at home in Badrinath and Kedarnath
Adi Shankaracharya, born at Kalady near Kochi, is credited with reviving worship at Badrinath and Kedarnath in the 8th century. His samadhi stands behind the Kedarnath temple, and by long tradition the chief priest of Badrinath, the rawal, is a Namboodiri Brahmin from Kerala. For many Malayali families this link makes the yatra feel like a homecoming as much as a journey.

Tips for travellers from Kerala
Cold is the biggest shock. Kochi rarely drops below 22°C; Kedarnath nights can be below zero. Pack thermals, a heavy jacket, gloves and a woollen cap.
Food. Meals are North Indian vegetarian: roti, dal, rice and sabzi. Carry some familiar snacks; rice is easier to find than idli or dosa.
Timing with home festivals. Mid-September to October brings the clearest weather on the route; plan around Onam and Navaratri at home.
