Char Dham Yatra Package by Car 2027

Why a private car suits the Char Dham Yatra

The four shrines of Uttarakhand are spread across three districts and roughly 1,250 km of mountain road. Buses run on fixed timings and stop where the timetable says; a private car stops where your family needs it to. If your mother needs a tea break at Devprayag, or you want an extra half hour at the Gangnani hot spring, the car waits. That freedom is the main reason most pilgrims book the Char Dham Yatra by car.

Every car package comes with a driver who drives these roads all season. Hill driving is a skill of its own: narrow stretches near Dharasu, loose shoulders after rain and long climbs to Badrinath. A local driver also knows where the parking is at Janki Chatti and Sonprayag, which hotels serve early breakfast and when to leave to beat the morning queue of vehicles.

Which car should you book?

The right vehicle depends on how many people are travelling and how much luggage you carry. Below is the estimated cost of the vehicle alone for the 10-day Haridwar-to-Haridwar circuit, including fuel, driver, tolls, parking and permits.

VehicleSeatsBest for10-day cost (per vehicle)
Swift Dzire (sedan)4Couples, small families with light bags₹38,000
Ertiga (MUV)6Families of 4–5₹46,000
Innova Crysta6–7Elders, more legroom and luggage₹58,000
Tempo Traveller12Two or three families together₹78,000
Tempo Traveller17Large groups, satsang mandals₹92,000

Vehicle-only rates are 2027 estimates for Haridwar to Haridwar. Hotels and meals are extra unless you book a full package.

Our advice is simple. A sedan is fine for two or three people. For four or more, or anyone over sixty, the Innova Crysta is worth the difference because the seats are higher and the ride is softer on long days like Uttarkashi to Guptkashi. For bigger groups, see the Tempo Traveller package from Haridwar or the Innova Crysta booking page.

Day-by-day route by car from Haridwar

The circuit runs west to east, the traditional order: Yamunotri, then Gangotri, then Kedarnath and finally Badrinath. Driving times are realistic for a car in normal weather, not best-case figures.

  1. Day
    1

    Haridwar to Barkot

    210 km7–8 hoursNight: Barkot

Your driver collects you in Haridwar after breakfast. The road climbs through Dehradun to Mussoorie, where most cars stop for a view of the Doon valley, then drops to Kempty Falls and the Yamuna valley. Barkot is a quiet town with apple orchards and is the base for Yamunotri.

  2. Day
    2

    Yamunotri darshan

45 km each way + 6 km trekFull dayNight: Barkot

The car takes you to Janki Chatti, the last road point, and parks there for the day. Walk or ride a pony up the 6 km path to the temple of Goddess Yamuna and cook rice in the Surya Kund as prasad. The driver waits below and brings you back to Barkot by evening.

  3. Day
    3

    Barkot to Uttarkashi

    100 km4–5 hoursNight: Uttarkashi

A shorter driving day through Brahmkhal and Dharasu to the Bhagirathi valley. In Uttarkashi there is time to visit the Kashi Vishwanath temple and walk along the river. Use the afternoon to rest your legs after the Yamunotri trek.

  4. Day
    4

    Gangotri day trip

100 km each way8–9 hours returnNight: Uttarkashi

Start early so the car reaches Gangotri before the midday crowd. The road passes the Gangnani hot spring and the deodar forests of Harsil. Gangotri temple is a short walk from the parking; after darshan, see Bhagirath Shila and the river, then return to Uttarkashi.

  5. Day
    5

    Uttarkashi to Guptkashi

    220 km8–9 hoursNight: Guptkashi / Sitapur

The longest drive of the trip, via Chamba and Tehri lake towards the Mandakini valley. Your driver plans meal stops so you are not on the road after dark. Pack a small bag tonight for the Kedarnath trek and leave the big luggage in the car.

  6. Day
    6

    Sonprayag to Kedarnath

    30 km drive + 16 km trek7–9 hoursNight: Kedarnath

Private cars stop at Sonprayag; from there a shared jeep runs 5 km to Gaurikund. The trek follows the Mandakini through Jungle Chatti and Lincholi to the temple. Pilgrims with IRCTC helicopter seats are dropped at Phata, Sersi or Guptkashi helipad instead.

  7. Day
    7

    Kedarnath to Guptkashi

16 km trek + 30 km driveFull dayNight: Guptkashi

Early morning darshan of the Jyotirlinga, then a visit to the Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi behind the temple. Walk down to Gaurikund and take the jeep to Sonprayag, where your car is waiting. A hot meal and a proper bed at Guptkashi follow.

  8. Day
    8

    Guptkashi to Badrinath

    200 km8–9 hoursNight: Badrinath

The car crosses to the Alaknanda valley through Ukhimath and the Chopta forest, then climbs through Chamoli and Joshimath. The last stretch to Badrinath runs between steep cliffs and needs a careful driver. Reach in the afternoon for a Tapt Kund dip and evening aarti.

  9. Day
    9

Badrinath and Mana, drive to Rudraprayag

    160 km6–7 hoursNight: Rudraprayag / Srinagar

Morning darshan of Badri Narayan, then a 3 km drive to Mana, the last village before the Tibet border, for Vyas Gufa and Bhim Pul. After lunch the car heads downhill along the Alaknanda. Stay overnight at Rudraprayag or Srinagar.

  10. Day
    10

    Return to Haridwar

    165 km6–7 hoursNight: Tour ends

The final drive passes the sangam at Devprayag, where the Ganga takes its name. You reach Haridwar by mid-afternoon for the evening aarti or your onward train. The driver drops you at your station or hotel.

Road travel tips for the four dhams

  • Leave early. Hill roads are calmer before 9 am, and many stretches have one-way traffic control in peak season.
  • Carry a motion-sickness tablet. The Mussoorie and Badrinath roads have many bends; sit in front if you feel queasy.
  • Keep cash. ATMs exist in Barkot, Uttarkashi, Guptkashi and Joshimath, but mobile networks can drop above them.
  • Avoid July and August. Monsoon landslides can block the road for hours; keep one spare day if you travel then.
  • Respect driving hours. Night driving is avoided in the hills for safety, so build that into your plans.
  • Register first. The free registration is checked at several points; see the registration guide.

Char Dham Yatra by car: FAQ

How much does a car cost for the Char Dham Yatra?

For 10 days from Haridwar, a Dzire costs about ₹38,000, an Ertiga ₹46,000 and an Innova Crysta ₹58,000, including fuel, driver, tolls, parking and permits. These are 2027 estimates.

Can I take my own car on the Char Dham Yatra?

Yes, private cars are allowed with yatra registration, but the roads are demanding and parking is tight at Janki Chatti and Sonprayag. Most families prefer a local hill driver.

Does the car go up to Kedarnath?

No. Cars stop at Sonprayag. A shared jeep runs to Gaurikund and the last 16 km is on foot, pony, palki or by helicopter from Phata, Sersi or Guptkashi.

Which car is best for senior citizens?

The Innova Crysta, because of its comfortable seats and ground clearance. See the Innova package from Haridwar.

Can we start from Delhi by car?

Yes. The Delhi package is 11 nights and 12 days with a door pick-up, from about ₹24,500 per person.

Does the driver stay with us?

Yes. The same driver stays with you for the whole trip. His food, stay and allowance are included in the price.

Is the car package cheaper than a bus?

A bus seat costs less, from ₹15,500, but a car split among four people is close in price and far more flexible.
