Yamunotri + Gangotri
- Barkot and Uttarkashi stays
- Return to Rishikesh
- Private car
Many pilgrims spend a few days in Rishikesh for yoga, satsang or the evening aarti and then head into the hills. This plan picks you up from your ashram or hotel and returns you to the Ganga's banks five nights later.
Rishikesh sits where the Ganga breaks out of the Shivalik hills, about 25 km upstream of Haridwar. It is closer to the mountain roads than any other big town on the plains, so a yatra that begins here gets into the hills quickly. Foreign and NRI travellers often land at Jolly Grant airport, only 35 km away, spend a night or two on the ghats, and then begin the trip to Yamunotri and Gangotri.
The tour is a five-night loop with two nights at Barkot for Yamunotri, two nights at Uttarkashi for Gangotri and a final night back in Rishikesh. The price is the same as the package from Haridwar, because the two towns are so close. What changes is the feel: you finish with the Triveni Ghat aarti and the quiet of the ashram belt rather than the bustle of Har Ki Pauri.
If you have more days, the same start works for the Char Dham Yatra from Rishikesh or a three-shrine Teen Dham tour from Rishikesh.
All prices are per person for a group of four on twin or triple sharing. They include hotels, breakfast and dinner, and the vehicle with driver for six days.

There are two ways from Rishikesh to Barkot: up through Dehradun and Mussoorie, or along the Tehri side via Chamba and Dharasu. Both take most of a day; your driver chooses based on road conditions and traffic that week.
Your driver collects you from your ashram, hotel or Yog Nagari station after breakfast. On the Mussoorie route you get views over the Doon valley and a tea stop near Kempty Falls; on the Chamba route you pass the edge of the Tehri reservoir. Either way you meet the Yamuna before Barkot and check in by evening.
Leave Barkot early for Janki Chatti, the end of the road. Walk the 6 km trail or hire a pony, palki or pithoo at the start; rates are fixed by the local administration. At the shrine, cook rice in the Surya Kund spring as prasad and pray at the Divya Shila before darshan. Return to Barkot in the evening.
A short drive over the ridge to the Bhagirathi valley. In Uttarkashi, visit the Kashi Vishwanath temple and the Shakti temple with its great iron trident. The rest of the afternoon is for resting tired legs.
Drive up the valley past the Maneri dam, the Gangnani hot spring and Harsil's apple orchards. At Gangotri, take a holy dip or sprinkle river water at the ghat, see the Bhagirath Shila and enter the temple for darshan of Goddess Ganga. Drive back to Uttarkashi for dinner.
Come down through Chinyalisaur and Chamba to Rishikesh by mid-afternoon. Freshen up and walk to Triveni Ghat or Parmarth Niketan for the evening Ganga aarti, giving thanks at the river you have just seen at her source.
Spend the morning at Ram Jhula and Laxman Jhula or simply sit by the river. Your driver drops you at Yog Nagari station, Haridwar or Jolly Grant airport after checkout.
| Night stop | Nights | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Barkot | 2 | Hill hotels; budget rooms from about ₹1,500 a night |
| Uttarkashi | 2 | Town hotels by the Bhagirathi, about ₹1,800–5,500 |
| Rishikesh | 1 | Hotel near the ghats or Tapovan area |
Hotel detail for each stop is on our Yamunotri hotels and Gangotri hotels pages.
Neither shrine is extremely high, but Yamunotri's 6 km climb ends above 3,200 m. A day of walking around Rishikesh before you leave helps you judge your pace. Carry warm layers, a rain shell and the items on our packing list.
