From the ghats of Kashi to the source of the Ganga and the Jyotirlinga at Kedarnath: an overnight train to Haridwar or Delhi, then ten days on Himalayan roads.
Kashi to Kedar: why this pilgrimage feels natural from Varanasi
Many Kashi families feel that a pilgrim who has bowed to Vishwanath in Varanasi should one day stand before Kedarnath in the Himalaya. Both are Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, and the river that flows past Dashashwamedh Ghat begins its journey at Gangotri, one of the four dhams. For families in Varanasi, the Char Dham Yatra is less a holiday than the upstream half of a story they already live in.
The practical side is straightforward. Varanasi is about 800 km from Delhi and roughly 900 km from Haridwar by road. Overnight trains link the city with Delhi, and some services run towards Haridwar and Dehradun as well; check IRCTC for what operates on your dates. Arrive in Haridwar and you can join our 9-night circuit directly. Arrive in Delhi and our 11-night plan picks you up there.

Starting in Haridwar saves two days of driving and about ₹3,000 per person. It suits pilgrims who can find a convenient train. Starting in Delhi gives you more flight and train choices, and the car meets you at the station or airport. Either way, our Haridwar package and Delhi package follow the same mountain route and hotels.
Coming via Delhi? Add a Delhi–Haridwar drive at the start and a Haridwar–Delhi drive at the end, with a night in Haridwar each time.
Day 1
Haridwar to Barkot
210 km7–8 hoursNight: Barkot
Your driver meets the train at Haridwar or collects you from your hotel. The road climbs through Dehradun and Mussoorie with views back over the Doon valley. In the evening you settle into Barkot, the base for Yamunotri.
Day 2
Yamunotri darshan
45 km + 6 km trekFull dayNight: Barkot
From Janki Chatti the 6 km path rises to the shrine of Goddess Yamuna, the sister of Yama. Varanasi pilgrims often note the link: Yamuna's blessing is believed to free one from the fear of death, much as Kashi is the city of liberation. Return to Barkot by dusk.
Day 3
Barkot to Uttarkashi
100 km4–5 hoursNight: Uttarkashi
Cross into the Bhagirathi valley. Uttarkashi's name means the Kashi of the north, and its Vishwanath temple will feel familiar. An unhurried afternoon follows.
Day 4
Gangotri
100 km each wayFull dayNight: Uttarkashi
Drive upstream past Gangnani and Harsil to Gangotri. This is where the river you know as Ma Ganga is worshipped at its origin; Gaumukh glacier lies 18 km beyond. Many families fill a can of Gangajal here to carry home.

Day 5
Uttarkashi to Guptkashi
220 km8–9 hoursNight: Guptkashi
The longest drive, past Tehri dam and Srinagar Garhwal to Rudraprayag and up the Mandakini. Guptkashi faces the Chaukhamba peaks. Sort a small bag for the night at Kedarnath.
Day 6
Kedarnath
30 km + 16 km trek6–9 hoursNight: Kedarnath
Shared jeep from Sonprayag to Gaurikund, then the 16 km climb to the Jyotirlinga at 3,583 m. Ponies, palkis and pithoos are available, and IRCTC shuttle helicopters fly from Phata, Sersi and Guptkashi for those who have booked. Evening aarti at the temple.
Day 7
Darshan, back to Guptkashi
16 km trek + 30 kmFull dayNight: Guptkashi
Pre-dawn darshan, then Bhairavnath temple, guardian of Kedarnath, just as Kaal Bhairav guards Kashi. Descend to Gaurikund and drive back to Guptkashi. Knees feel the descent more than the climb, so a walking stick helps.
Day 8
Guptkashi to Badrinath
200 km8–9 hoursNight: Badrinath
Via Ukhimath, where Kedarnath's deity spends the winter, into the Alaknanda valley and up past Joshimath. Arrive at Badrinath for the evening aarti after a bath in Tapt Kund. The town sits at 3,133 m, so evenings are cold.
Day 9
Badrinath and Mana
160 km6–7 hoursNight: Rudraprayag / Srinagar
Darshan of Badri Narayan and, for families who wish, pind daan at Brahma Kapal on the riverbank. Visit Mana village and Bhim Pul. Drive down to Rudraprayag or Srinagar.
Day 10
Return to Haridwar
165 km6–7 hoursNight: Tour ends
At Devprayag the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda become the Ganga, the same river that will reach Varanasi weeks later. Continue through Rishikesh to Haridwar for your train home. Your driver can drop you at the station or at a hotel near Har Ki Pauri.

Some trains connect Varanasi with Haridwar and Dehradun. Timetables change, so check IRCTC for current services. If none suits you, go via Delhi.
