No railway line climbs to any of the four dhams, but the train still does the hardest part: getting you from your home city to the foot of the Himalaya. From the station, our car takes over.
Trains run only as far as the foothills. The three railheads used by pilgrims are Haridwar Junction, Rishikesh (Yog Nagari) and Dehradun. Beyond them every route to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath is by road. So a "Char Dham package by train" means two parts: a train journey you book yourself on IRCTC, and a road package that starts the moment you step off the platform.
This combination is popular with pilgrims from Gujarat, Maharashtra, Bengal, Odisha, Bihar and the South because rail is affordable, sleeper berths let elders rest, and luggage limits are generous. Our driver meets you at the station, the road tour runs for ten days, and he drops you back at the station for your return train.

Haridwar, Rishikesh or Dehradun: which station to choose
Station
Why choose it
Distance to first night stop (Barkot)
Haridwar Junction
Most trains, including direct trains from many states; holy dip at Har Ki Pauri
About 210 km
Rishikesh (Yog Nagari)
Quieter, closer to the hills; fewer long-distance trains
About 200 km
Dehradun
Good for trains from the east and for the Mussoorie road
About 140 km
If you have a choice, Haridwar is the safest bet: it has the most connections and our standard Haridwar package is built around it. Trains to Dehradun suit the Dehradun package, and Rishikesh arrivals join the Rishikesh package. The price is the same for all three.

Choose an early-morning arrival. It gives you a few hours to freshen up before the drive to Barkot, or plan to arrive a day earlier.
Keep a buffer on the way home. Book the return train for the evening of day 10, or better, the next day, since hill roads can be delayed.
Far away? Fly to Delhi or Dehradun instead: see Char Dham by air.
