Why start the Char Dham from Dehradun?

Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, sits in a broad valley between the Shivalik hills and the Mussoorie ridge. For the Char Dham it has two big advantages. First, Jolly Grant airport has direct flights from many Indian cities, so travellers from Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad or Kolkata can land in the morning and be in the hills the same day. Second, the road from Dehradun to Barkot is the shortest way into the Yamuna valley: about 140 km via Mussoorie, against 210 km from Haridwar.

The rest of the route matches the Haridwar plan, so the price is the same. On the last day we bring you back to Dehradun city, the railway station or the airport, whichever suits your onward journey. If time is very short, Dehradun is also where Char Dham helicopter yatras begin, from the Sahastradhara helipad.

Dehradun Char Dham prices for 2027

Per person, 2027 estimates. Road prices are for a group of four on twin or triple sharing; two travellers pay about ₹27,500 each on budget, six about ₹22,000. The final quote depends on dates, hotels and group size.

Car-only hire is also possible: about ₹38,000 for a Dzire, ₹46,000 for an Ertiga or ₹58,000 for an Innova Crysta for the 10-day circuit. Large groups can take a 12 seater Tempo Traveller at about ₹78,000.

   Dehradun – Mussoorie – Barkot

   140 km5–6 hoursNight: Barkot

   Pick-up from the airport, the station or your hotel. The road zigzags up to Mussoorie, the "Queen of the Hills", where you can stop for tea with views of the snow peaks on a clear day. Past Kempty Falls it descends to the Yamuna. A shorter first day than the Haridwar start, so you reach Barkot with time to rest.

   Yamunotri

   45 km + 6 km trekFull dayNight: Barkot

   Drive to Janki Chatti and climb the 6 km path to the shrine of Goddess Yamuna at 3,293 m. Bathe in the hot springs and offer prayers at Divya Shila. Ponies and palkis are available. Return to Barkot.

   Barkot to Uttarkashi

   100 km4–5 hoursNight: Uttarkashi

   Drive through forests and farming villages to the Bhagirathi valley. Settle into Uttarkashi by lunch. Visit Kashi Vishwanath temple in the evening, one of the oldest shrines in the town.

   Gangotri

   A full-day excursion up the Bhagirathi via Gangnani and Harsil. Gangotri temple is reached by road, so no trek is needed. Walk down to the ghats to see the Bhagirathi racing over the rocks. Return to Uttarkashi before evening.

   Uttarkashi to Guptkashi

   Cross from the Bhagirathi to the Mandakini via Tehri and Srinagar. It is the longest drive of the trip, with stops for meals and tea. Night at Guptkashi or Sitapur.

   Kedarnath

   30 km + 16 km trek6–8 hours walkingNight: Kedarnath

   Drive to Sonprayag, take the shared jeep to Gaurikund and set off on the 16 km trail. Helicopter shuttle passengers with IRCTC tickets fly from Phata, Sersi or Guptkashi. Evening aarti and night at Kedarnath.

   Kedarnath to Guptkashi

   16 km trek + 30 kmFull dayNight: Guptkashi / Sitapur

   Early darshan of the Jyotirlinga and a short walk to the Bhairavnath temple if you have the energy. Trek down to Gaurikund and return to Guptkashi. Rest for the next drive.

   Guptkashi to Badrinath

   Drive via Ukhimath and Chopta to Chamoli, then up past Joshimath. Arrive at Badrinath in the afternoon. Tapt Kund bath and evening aarti.

   Badrinath, Mana, Rudraprayag

   Morning darshan of Badri Narayan and a visit to Mana village with Vyas Gufa and Bhim Pul. Descend the Alaknanda valley. Overnight at Rudraprayag or Srinagar.

    Drive via Devprayag and Rishikesh to Dehradun. Drop at Jolly Grant airport, which lies on this side of the city, or at Dehradun station or your hotel. Book an evening or next-day flight to be safe.

What is included

Night stops are the same as on the Haridwar route: two nights each at Barkot, Uttarkashi and Guptkashi or Sitapur, and one each at Kedarnath, Badrinath and Rudraprayag or Srinagar. Rooms at Kedarnath are basic in every category; see Kedarnath hotel booking.

Tips for a Dehradun start

• Keep a buffer between your landing time and the day 1 departure; hill roads are best driven in daylight.
• Mussoorie can be crowded on weekends in May and June; an early start avoids the traffic.
