The Ganga that meets the sea at Gangasagar begins her journey at Gangotri. For pilgrims from Kolkata, this yatra goes to the other end of the river, with Yamunotri on the way.
Bengal has a long tradition of pilgrimage to the Himalaya, and the Char Dham shrines have drawn travellers from Kolkata for generations. Gangotri carries a special meaning here: the river that flows past the ghats of Kolkata as the Hooghly begins as the Bhagirathi below the Gangotri glacier. Pairing it with Yamunotri, the shrine of Goddess Yamuna, gives a compact week-long yatra that fits well within a holiday.
Kolkata is roughly 1,450 km from Delhi and about 1,500 km from Haridwar by rail. The simplest plan for most families is to reach Haridwar or Dehradun and start the 5-night road tour from there. Those who find better flights to Delhi can join the 6-night tour from Delhi instead.
Autumn is a natural time for Bengali pilgrims to travel. The Puja holidays often fall between late September and October, which is also the clearest, calmest season in the Garhwal hills. Both shrines close around Diwali, so the window is good but not endless. Check the opening and closing dates before you book tickets.
A few long-distance trains run from Howrah towards Haridwar and Dehradun, taking well over a day. They suit families who like the comfort of an AC berth and plenty of luggage space. Others take a train to Delhi and join the tour there. Our Char Dham by train guide explains how to plan around railway timings.
Kolkata has many daily flights to Delhi and some connections to Dehradun's Jolly Grant airport, 35 km from Haridwar and Rishikesh. Flying to Dehradun lets you skip the Delhi–Haridwar drive. See Char Dham by air.

The driver meets you at Haridwar station, your hotel or Jolly Grant airport. Climb through Dehradun and Mussoorie, then wind down to the Yamuna valley through pine and oak forest. Reach Barkot by evening and prepare for an early start.
Drive to Janki Chatti and walk, ride or be carried up the 6 km path to the shrine. Pilgrims boil rice in the scalding Surya Kund and worship the Divya Shila before darshan of Goddess Yamuna. Come down by afternoon and drive back to Barkot.
Cross into the Bhagirathi valley, where you meet the river that becomes the Hooghly. In Uttarkashi visit the Kashi Vishwanath and Shakti temples, then rest.
Drive up past the Gangnani hot spring and through Harsil's deodar forests to Gangotri. Take a dip or sprinkle water at the ghat, see the Bhagirath Shila and enter the temple. Many Kolkata families collect Gangajal here to offer at home.
Descend via Chamba and Rishikesh. In the evening, join the Ganga aarti at Har Ki Pauri, a familiar sight for anyone who has watched the aarti on the ghats of Kolkata.
Visit Mansa Devi by ropeway or shop in the bazaar. Drop at Haridwar station, Dehradun airport or onward to Delhi on request, at extra cost.
Hotels are at Barkot (two nights), Uttarkashi (two nights) and Haridwar (one night). Rooms in the Yamunotri area cost about ₹1,500–4,500 and in Uttarkashi ₹1,800–5,500 a night. See the Yamunotri hotel guide.
