Tradition says a pilgrim should bathe in the Ganga at Haridwar before heading to the Himalayan shrines, and geography agrees. Haridwar sits at the foot of the hills with a major railway junction, a large bus stand and Dehradun airport only about 35 km away. From here the road to Barkot, the first night stop of the circuit, is around 210 km, and the whole loop back to Haridwar covers about 1,250 km.
Starting in Haridwar rather than Delhi saves two days and roughly ₹3,000 per person compared with our Delhi package. Most guests arrive by overnight train or bus, rest a few hours, and meet their driver the same morning. Others come a day early to attend the evening aarti at Har Ki Pauri and visit Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi temples before the yatra begins.

After an early Ganga snan, start the climb through Dehradun to the hill station of Mussoorie. Beyond Kempty Falls the road descends to the Yamuna and follows it upstream through Naugaon. Check in at Barkot, have an early dinner and sleep well before tomorrow's walk.

Barkot – Janki Chatti – Yamunotri – Barkot

Drive 45 km to Janki Chatti, the road head. From here a 6 km stone path climbs to the shrine of Yamuna Devi at 3,293 m, with ponies, palkis and pithoos for those who prefer not to walk. Pilgrims touch the Divya Shila and dip rice in the boiling Surya Kund before descending to the car.

Day 3
Barkot to Uttarkashi

A gentle drive over the ridge to the Bhagirathi valley. Uttarkashi is a temple town and its Kashi Vishwanath temple is worth an evening visit. Today is a good chance to rest and dry out clothes from the trek.

Gangotri darshan

Follow the Bhagirathi past Maneri, Bhatwari and the hot springs at Gangnani. The valley opens up at Harsil, famous for apples and deodar trees, before the road ends at Gangotri. After darshan of Mother Ganga and a look at Bhagirath Shila, return to Uttarkashi for the night.

Uttarkashi to Guptkashi

Leave at sunrise for the long transfer to the Kedar valley via Chamba and Tilwara. The road runs past Tehri lake and joins the Mandakini near Rudraprayag. Settle into your hotel at Guptkashi or Sitapur and prepare a light bag for Kedarnath.

Trek to Kedarnath

Reach Sonprayag early and take the shared jeep to Gaurikund. The paved trail climbs steadily to the shrine at 3,583 m; ponies and palkis are available, and pilgrims holding IRCTC helicopter tickets fly up instead. Evening aarti at Kedarnath, with the temple lit against the snow, is unforgettable.

Kedarnath to Guptkashi

Join the early queue for darshan of the Jyotirlinga and visit the Bhairavnath temple above the town. Walk down to Gaurikund, ride the jeep to Sonprayag and meet your driver. Rest overnight at Guptkashi.
Day 8
Guptkashi to Badrinath

Drive via Ukhimath, where Lord Kedarnath is worshipped in winter, and across to Chamoli on the Alaknanda. Pass Joshimath and Vishnuprayag and climb into the Badrinath valley between the Nar and Narayan peaks. A dip in the Tapt Kund and evening darshan end the day.

Badrinath – Mana – Rudraprayag

Morning darshan and, for those who wish, pind daan at Brahma Kapal. A short drive to Mana village shows Vyas Gufa, Ganesh Gufa and the Saraswati thundering under Bhim Pul. Afternoon drive down the valley to Rudraprayag or Srinagar.
Day 10
Back to Haridwar

Stop at Devprayag to see the Alaknanda meet the Bhagirathi. Continue through Rishikesh to Haridwar by afternoon. Many pilgrims end the yatra as they began it, with the Ganga aarti at Har Ki Pauri.

Getting to Haridwar for day 1
By train: Haridwar Junction has direct trains from Delhi and many other cities; overnight trains arriving early morning work best. See Char Dham by train.
By air: Fly to Jolly Grant airport, Dehradun, about 35 km away. Our driver can collect you there; see Char Dham by air.
By road: Delhi is about 230 km (6–7 hours). Guests from Delhi NCR can be collected from home on the Delhi package.

Arriving the evening before is the calmest option. You sleep in Haridwar, attend the aarti and start fresh at 6 am, which matters on the long climb to Barkot.
Practical tips for the yatra
Register every traveller online before departure (free) at the Uttarakhand Tourism portal or the Tourist Care Uttarakhand app; our registration guide walks you through it. Kedarnath helicopter shuttle seats are sold only on the IRCTC HeliYatra portal, so ignore websites or callers offering them otherwise.
Pack layers for both hot plains and freezing dawns, plus rain gear and broken-in shoes. Pony rates at Yamunotri and Kedarnath are fixed by the local administration and change each season, so carry enough cash. For the full checklist, see things to carry.

Can we do the yatra in fewer days from Haridwar?
