Char Dham by Bus
- Lowest price per person
- Scheduled departures
- Budget hotels, two meals
The most economical way to reach all four dhams with hotels and meals arranged: a seat on a yatra coach from Haridwar, or a whole bus for your mandal, society or temple group.
Pilgrims have travelled to the Himalayan shrines in buses for generations, and for good reason. A coach spreads the cost of fuel, tolls and the driver across thirty or more people, which brings the price per head down to a level no private car can match. Here you can book in one of two ways.
| Option | Duration | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Char Dham seat in coach (per seat) | 9N / 10D | ₹15,500 |
| Do Dham seat in coach (per seat) | 5N / 6D | ₹9,500 |
| Char Dham fixed departure seat, smaller vehicle (per seat) | 9N / 10D | ₹18,500 |
| Private Tempo package, group of 10–12 (per person) | 9N / 10D | ₹19,500 |
For a group that wants only the vehicle, a 12-seat Tempo Traveller for the 10-day circuit costs about ₹78,000 and a 17-seat about ₹92,000, including fuel, driver, tolls, parking and permits. Full-size buses for 25 or more people are quoted on request, as availability in peak weeks is limited.
All prices are 2027 estimates on budget hotels. Final price depends on dates, hotel availability and the number of travellers.
| Good to know | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Fixed schedule | Departure times are set; the coach cannot wait long for one person |
| Longer days | Large vehicles move slower on hill roads than cars |
| Shared company | Ideal if you enjoy travelling with fellow pilgrims and bhajans on the way |
| Lowest cost | Saves several thousand rupees per person over a private car |
| Less flexibility | Photo stops and detours are limited |
Elders who need frequent breaks may be more comfortable in a private car; see Char Dham by car. Young pilgrims, solo travellers and big groups usually find the bus perfectly comfortable. Couples who want a smaller vehicle at a similar price can look at the fixed departure tour.
Board the coach at the Haridwar meeting point in the early morning. The route climbs through Dehradun and Mussoorie, with a breakfast halt on the way. Arrive at Barkot in the evening; rooms are allotted on arrival.
The coach takes the group towards Janki Chatti, the start of the 6 km path to Yamunotri. Each pilgrim walks or hires a pony at their own cost. A fixed return time is announced so everyone is back for the drive to Barkot.
A shorter travel day across to the Bhagirathi valley. Afternoon free in Uttarkashi. Many groups hold an evening bhajan session at the hotel.
An early departure to Gangotri past Gangnani and Harsil. Darshan and a holy dip in the Bhagirathi near the temple. Return to Uttarkashi by night.
The longest day in the coach, so carry water and snacks. Lunch and tea halts are made at fixed points. Reach the Kedar valley in the evening.
Transfer to Sonprayag, then the shared jeep to Gaurikund and the 16 km trek or pony ride. Pilgrims with IRCTC helicopter seats make their own way to the helipad by arrangement. Overnight at Kedarnath.
Early darshan, then the trek down to Gaurikund and jeep to Sonprayag. The coach collects the group in the afternoon. Night at Guptkashi.
Long drive via Ukhimath, Chamoli and Joshimath. Reach Badrinath by evening. Tapt Kund bath before dinner.
Morning darshan at Badrinath and a visit to Mana village. The coach departs after lunch for Rudraprayag or Srinagar. Last night of the tour.
Drive down via Devprayag and Rishikesh. Arrive in Haridwar in the afternoon or evening. Plan your train or bus home for later that night or the next day.
