Gangotri + Yamunotri
- Delhi airport pick-up
- Two shrines
- Budget to Luxury hotels
If you have walked up Sinhagad or Rajgad on a monsoon weekend, the 6 km path to Yamunotri will feel familiar, only higher and colder. Here is how a Pune family turns a week's leave into darshan at both western dhams.
Pune is about 1,500 km from Delhi, too far to drive sensibly, so almost every Pune pilgrim flies or takes the train north. Once you land, the trip is a private road tour: Haridwar, the Yamuna valley at Barkot, the 6 km walk to Yamunotri (3,293 m), the Bhagirathi valley at Uttarkashi and the road to Gangotri (3,100 m).
Punekars tend to be good walkers, and the Yamunotri trail suits them. The path is paved and well used, with tea stalls every kilometre, but it climbs steadily all the way from Janki Chatti and the thin air above 3,000 m slows everyone down. Walk it at a steady fort-trek pace, carry water and you will be fine. Elders can hire a pony or palki at the official counter.
Gangotri, by contrast, needs no walking at all; the road runs to the temple. That mix makes this a good first Himalayan yatra for a Pune family, before attempting Kedarnath on the full Char Dham Yatra from Pune.
The table shows how the whole holiday usually works for a family flying from Pune. Adjust the first and last days to your flight times.
| Day | What happens | Night |
|---|---|---|
| Day 0 | Fly Pune to Delhi; optional Delhi hotel if you land late | Delhi (optional) |
| Days 1–7 | Road yatra: Haridwar, Barkot, Yamunotri, Uttarkashi, Gangotri, Haridwar, back to Delhi | As per itinerary |
| Day 7 evening / Day 8 | Fly Delhi to Pune | Home |
Flying into Dehradun instead of Delhi lets you take the shorter 5N/6D package from Haridwar, saving a day and about ₹2,000 per person on the land price. Compare routes on our Char Dham by air page.
Per person on twin or triple sharing, four travellers in one car. Flights or trains from Pune are not included.

Land in Delhi, meet the driver at arrivals and head north out of the city. Lunch on the highway, reach Haridwar by late afternoon and settle in. The evening aarti at Har Ki Pauri is a short walk or rickshaw ride from most hotels.
The road gains height fast after Dehradun. Pause at Mussoorie for the view and at Kempty Falls, then follow the Yamuna upstream to Barkot. Lay out warm clothes and trekking shoes for the morning.
Drive to Janki Chatti before 7 am. The trail climbs the gorge in steady switchbacks; take it slowly, especially the last stretch. At the shrine, pilgrims cook rice in the Surya Kund and pray at the Divya Shila before darshan. Walk down in the afternoon and drive back to Barkot.
An easy drive across to the Bhagirathi valley. Visit the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Uttarkashi in the evening and give your legs a rest.
Set out early through Bhatwari and Gangnani, where a hot spring flows by the road, and on through Harsil's orchards. At Gangotri, offer prayers at the ghat, see the Bhagirath Shila and take darshan of Goddess Ganga before returning to Uttarkashi.
Descend via Chamba and Rishikesh. Stop at Laxman Jhula or Triveni Ghat if there is time, then check into your Haridwar hotel.
Drive back to Delhi and get dropped at the airport for an evening flight to Pune. If your flight is early next morning, ask us to add a hotel near the airport.
Rooms at Barkot and Uttarkashi are clean but simple, roughly ₹1,500–5,500 a night depending on category. See Gangotri hotels and Yamunotri hotels.
Flight schedules change by season. Delhi always has frequent flights from Pune; Dehradun may need a connection. Either way, we meet you at the airport.
The land tour from Delhi starts at an estimated ₹14,500 per person (Budget, four travellers), or ₹12,500 if you join at Haridwar or Dehradun. Flights are extra. Final quotes depend on dates, hotels and group size.
Similar effort to a long fort climb, but at over 3,000 m, so you will breathe harder. The path is paved, with rest points throughout.
About 8–9 days, including flights. Joining at Dehradun can trim it to 7–8.
We arrange private tours for families and groups. Larger groups travel in a Tempo Traveller; see Gangotri Yamunotri by car for vehicle options.
Yes, the Gangotri Yamunotri helicopter yatra runs from Dehradun in 2 nights and 3 days as a charter.
