Phata to Kedarnath Helicopter Online Booking 2027

Where Phata is and why pilgrims choose it

Phata is a small roadside village in the Mandakini valley, roughly midway between Guptkashi and Sonprayag on the road to Kedarnath. Several helipads sit on the terraces around it, and from here the shuttle helicopter climbs up the gorge to the Kedarnath helipad in well under ten minutes. A walk of about 500 m from the Kedarnath helipad brings you to the temple.

The popularity of Phata comes down to two things: it is closer to Kedarnath than Guptkashi, which keeps the fare lower, and it avoids the congested final stretch of road to Sonprayag. The other shuttle bases are Sersi, a little further up the valley, and Guptkashi, the farthest and most expensive of the three.

Many pilgrims book the one-way up and walk down. The descent from Kedarnath to Gaurikund is 16 km but far easier on the lungs than the climb, and it lets you see the valley at your own pace. If you are short of time, the round trip turns Kedarnath into a single-day visit.

Booking the Phata helicopter online, step by step

  1. Register for the yatra first. Use registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in or the Tourist Care Uttarakhand app. Each pilgrim gets a registration number; it is free. See the registration guide.
  2. Open heliyatra.irctc.co.in and create a login well before the booking window. Check your mobile number and email are working.
  3. Watch for the booking window. IRCTC announces the opening of seats for each period; dates and times are posted on the portal.
  4. Select Phata as the helipad, then the date and sector (round trip or one way).
  5. Add passengers by entering their yatra registration numbers. Details must match the photo ID each person will carry.
  6. Pay online and download the ticket. Keep a printout and a copy on your phone.
  7. Share the ticket with your tour operator so hotels and the car are fixed around your flight date.
Phata tickets are sold only on heliyatra.irctc.co.in. Websites, social media pages, WhatsApp numbers or agents promising "confirmed Phata tickets" for extra money are not genuine. Every season pilgrims lose money this way. If in doubt, read how IRCTC booking works.

If Phata seats are sold out for your date

It happens to many pilgrims, especially for the opening weeks and the school holidays of late May and June. Before giving up on flying, try these in order.

  1. Check Sersi and Guptkashi for the same date. They fly the same short route; Guptkashi costs a little more.
  2. Shift your date by a day or two if your road plan allows. Our drivers can rearrange hotels at short notice when there is room.
  3. Look at one-way seats too. If a one-way seat is available, you can walk or ride a pony the other way.
  4. Walk, ride or take a palki from Gaurikund. Pony and palki rates are fixed by the local administration and change each season.
  5. Consider a charter from Dehradun if a guaranteed flight matters more than cost; see Kedarnath helicopter from Dehradun.

Seniors who cannot walk far are best served by deciding early. If Phata seats look unlikely, a palki hired at Gaurikund is a reliable fallback, and a stay at Kedarnath breaks the journey into two gentler halves.
