The yatra season runs from late April to November, but the experience changes a lot from month to month. Snow, crowds, monsoon landslides and autumn skies all shape your journey. Here is how to choose.

  • Best: May–June
  • Clearest: mid-Sep–Oct
  • Avoid: July–August
  • Temples shut Nov–April

The short answer

If you can choose freely, go in the second half of May, June, or from mid-September to the end of October. These are the two windows when the roads are most reliable, the shrines are free of deep snow and the weather is kind to elderly travellers. May and June are the busiest; late September and October are calmer and give the clearest mountain views of the year.

May and June: the main season

This is when most of India travels: schools are closed and the plains are scorching, so the cool Himalaya is a relief. The shrines are busy from dawn to night, with long queues at Kedarnath and Badrinath, but the atmosphere of a full yatra is part of the experience for many families.

  • Temperatures: pleasant days in Barkot, Uttarkashi and Guptkashi; close to freezing at dawn in Kedarnath and Badrinath.
  • Booking: hotels in Guptkashi, Sitapur and Barkot fill weeks ahead. Book transport and rooms as soon as you know your dates.
  • Traffic: the Rishikesh–Srinagar road and the approach to Sonprayag can be jammed; leave early each morning.
  • Helicopter: IRCTC shuttle seats for May sell out quickly. Read IRCTC helicopter booking before the window opens.

July and August: why we advise against them

The monsoon brings heavy rain to the Garhwal hills. Landslides can block roads for hours or days, especially between Rishikesh and Rudraprayag, around Sonprayag, and on the Gangotri and Badrinath highways. Helicopter services are often grounded by cloud. Trails become slippery and river levels rise.

Some pilgrims still travel in these months because of school calendars or because they want low crowds. If you must go, keep two buffer days, carry rain gear, choose a shorter trip such as the Do Dham Yatra, and accept that the plan may change. Extra hotel nights caused by landslides are not part of any package price.

Shravan, which falls in the monsoon, is a favoured month for Shiva worship. If you want a Kedarnath darshan then, consider the shorter Kedarnath yatra with spare days, rather than the full four-shrine circuit.

September and October: the photographer's season

Once the rain recedes, usually by the middle of September, the valleys are washed clean and green, the rivers run clear and the snow peaks stand out sharply against blue skies. Crowds are a fraction of May's, so darshan is calmer and hotels easier to find. October is crisp and dry, and many experienced pilgrims call it the best month of all.

  • Nights are cold, especially in late October; pack proper woollens and a down jacket.
  • Days are shorter, so plan to finish driving by early evening.
  • Diwali and Bhai Dooj mark the closing of Gangotri, Kedarnath and Yamunotri, so the latest dates depend on the festival calendar.
  • Pair the yatra with Auli or the Tungnath trek for autumn views.

Best time for Char Dham: FAQ

Which is the best month for the Char Dham Yatra?

May and June for the main season, or mid-September to October for clear skies and fewer crowds. October is many regular pilgrims' favourite.

Is it safe to do the Char Dham Yatra in July or August?

It is possible but not recommended. Monsoon landslides often block roads and helicopters are frequently grounded. Keep buffer days if you must go.

Is there snow at Kedarnath in May?

Often, yes, especially in the first weeks after opening. The path is cleared, but snow lies beside it and nights are below freezing.

When is the Char Dham Yatra least crowded?

Late September and October, once the monsoon ends. Mid-June to early July is also quieter, but rain starts by then.

What is the weather like at the shrines in October?

Dry and sunny by day, cold at night, with temperatures near or below freezing at Kedarnath and Badrinath by late October.

Can I do the yatra in November?

Only partly. Gangotri, Kedarnath and Yamunotri close around Diwali and Bhai Dooj; Badrinath usually stays open until mid-November.

When should I book for May 2027?

As early as possible, ideally once the opening dates are announced between January and March. Hotels near Kedarnath and Yamunotri fill first.
