Starting at the gateway: the Haridwar advantage

Traditionally, pilgrims bathed at Har Ki Pauri before setting out for the high shrines, and Haridwar is still the most sensible place to begin. It is the last major railway junction before the hills, Dehradun's Jolly Grant airport is about 35 km away, and every road to the upper Ganga and Alaknanda valleys passes through it. Starting here instead of Delhi saves two full days of plains driving and about ₹2,000 per person.

The route is a loop through two river valleys. You drive up the Mandakini to Guptkashi for Kedarnath, cross the ridge at Ukhimath to reach the Alaknanda and Badrinath, and return through Devprayag. Five nights is the comfortable minimum; a sixth night gives slack for weather or a slower Kedarnath descent.

Who books this plan? Mostly families who arrive in Haridwar by overnight train, travellers flying into Dehradun, and people already in Rishikesh for a retreat. It also suits pilgrims who have done Gangotri and Yamunotri in an earlier year and now want to complete the remaining two dhams. If your group has young children or elders, we usually recommend the Deluxe category, which puts you in quieter hotels with reliable hot water at Guptkashi and Badrinath.

   1

   Haridwar to Guptkashi via Devprayag

   200 km7–8 hoursNight: Guptkashi

   We meet you at your Haridwar hotel, the railway station or Jolly Grant airport by 7 am. Past Rishikesh the road enters the gorge of the Ganga, and the first long halt is at Devprayag, where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda join. Lunch is at Rudraprayag; by evening you are in Guptkashi, with the Kedarnath range lit up across the valley.

   The climb to Kedarnath

   A pre-dawn start brings you to Sonprayag, where registrations are checked before the shared jeep to Gaurikund. From there, walk or ride the stone-paved path beside the Mandakini, past Rambara and Linchauli. Shuttle ticket holders fly from Phata, Sersi or Guptkashi and reach the shrine in minutes. Stay near the temple for the evening aarti.

   Dawn darshan and descent

   16 km + 30 kmFull dayNight: Guptkashi

   Morning darshan is the high point of the trip: the Jyotirlinga in its stone sanctum, with snow peaks rising behind. Climb to Bhairavnath if your legs allow, then descend to Gaurikund. The driver collects you at Sonprayag for the short drive back to Guptkashi.

   Across the ridge to Badrinath

   200 km8–9 hoursNight: Badrinath

   Today crosses from the Mandakini to the Alaknanda. The road passes Ukhimath, where Kedarnath's deity spends the winter, and runs through rhododendron and oak forest near Chopta. After Chamoli and Joshimath, the final 45 km climb to Badrinath, where the Tapt Kund hot spring waits.

   Badri Narayan and Mana village

   About 160 km6–7 hoursNight: Rudraprayag / Srinagar

   Take darshan early, then visit Brahma Kapal on the river bank, where many families perform rites for ancestors. Mana village, 3 km on, has Vyas Gufa, Ganesh Gufa and the natural stone bridge of Bhim Pul. In the afternoon, drive down the Alaknanda to Rudraprayag or Srinagar for the night.

   Back to Haridwar

   About 165 km6–7 hoursNight: Tour ends

   An easy morning drive brings you back through Devprayag and Rishikesh. We drop you at Haridwar station, your hotel or Dehradun airport. If time allows, the evening aarti at Har Ki Pauri is a good way to close the yatra.

Reaching Haridwar for the start

By train: Haridwar Junction is served by trains from Delhi and many other cities; an overnight train that arrives early morning lets you start day 1 straight from the platform. See the Char Dham by train guide for planning tips.

By air: Jolly Grant airport at Dehradun is about 35 km from Haridwar. If your flight lands before 10 am, we can still reach Guptkashi the same day; otherwise spend a night in Haridwar or Rishikesh. More in our Char Dham by air page.

By road: Buses run all day from Delhi's ISBT Kashmere Gate. If you would rather be collected from home, choose the Delhi package.

Local tips from our Haridwar drivers

• Arrive in Haridwar the evening before; a 6 am start on day 1 makes all the difference.
• Keep a small day bag for Kedarnath, since your main luggage stays in the car at Sonprayag.
• Cash is useful: ATMs exist in Guptkashi and Joshimath, but networks can be patchy higher up.
• Pony and palki rates are fixed by the local administration and change each season; use the official counters at Gaurikund.
• If heavy rain is forecast, we may swap the order and do Badrinath first; your driver will explain.
• Senior travellers should read Char Dham do's and don'ts before leaving.
