Krystal Aviation and how Kedarnath seats are sold

Krystal Aviation is a private helicopter company that pilgrims often look up when planning the Kedarnath shuttle. On this route, though, you do not buy a seat from the company. The state allots each season's Kedarnath sectors to a set of operators, fixes the fares, and sells every seat through the IRCTC HeliYatra portal (heliyatra.irctc.co.in). When you book a helipad, date and slot there, the operator flying it is shown on the ticket.

Because allotments change from one season to the next, we cannot promise which helipad any operator will fly in 2027. Check the portal when booking opens. We also do not publish fleet or aircraft details; those are for the operator to confirm. What we can do is explain the process clearly and plan the rest of your trip around the seat you get.

Fares and booking in brief

Fares are fixed per sector and are the same for every operator. 2027 fares will be shown on the IRCTC portal.

1. Register for the yatra (free) on registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in or the Tourist Care Uttarakhand app.
2. Log in to IRCTC HeliYatra when the booking window for your dates opens.
3. Pick helipad, date, sector and slot; the operator is shown with the slot.
4. Enter registration numbers, pay on the portal and download the ticket.

Should you fly at all? An honest comparison

The shuttle is a wonderful option, but it is not automatically the right one for everyone. The 16 km trek from Gaurikund is part of the pilgrimage for many families, and the slow climb actually helps the body adjust to the altitude. Weigh the two before you spend booking day refreshing the portal.

Pony and palki rates are fixed by the local administration and change each season. Many families mix the two: one or two elders fly while the rest walk, and everyone meets at the temple. Our Kedarnath yatra packages can be planned either way.

The times below are only a guide. Your reporting time is printed on the ticket, and the operator may adjust the schedule for weather.

Using your time at Kedarnath well

Helicopter pilgrims sometimes feel rushed at the top. A little planning helps you get the most from the hours between landing and your return slot.

• Go straight to the darshan queue. Queues are usually shortest early in the day.
• See the Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi behind the temple, and the large rock said to have shielded the shrine in 2013.
• Look up at Bhairavnath. The temple on the ridge is a short, steep climb; skip it if you feel breathless.
• Move slowly. At 3,583 m, without the gradual climb of the trek, the altitude can hit suddenly. Rest if you feel dizzy.
• Keep an eye on the time. Be back at the helipad well before your return slot; a missed slot can be hard to replace.

When the weather does not cooperate

Mountain helicopters need clear daylight. Low cloud in the gorge, rain or strong wind can hold flights for an hour or for the whole day. Pilgrims are told at the helipad; there is little to be gained by arguing with the crew, whose job is to keep you safe. Rescheduling and refunds follow the terms on the IRCTC portal.

• Keep one spare day in your plan whenever possible.
• If a long wait seems likely, ask your driver about the trek or a pony from Gaurikund as a fallback.
• Avoid July and August, when cancellations are frequent. The best time to visit page explains the seasons.
• Do not book a train or flight home for the same evening as your helicopter.
