Gangotri + Yamunotri
- Suits direct trains
- Barkot and Uttarkashi stays
- Private car
For families in Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot and the rest of Gujarat: take a train or flight to Haridwar, Dehradun or Delhi, and travel on to Yamunotri and Gangotri in your own car with a hill driver.
Gujarati pilgrims are among the most regular visitors on the Char Dham roads, often travelling as large joint families or as a society group. The Gangotri Yamunotri yatra is a popular choice because it fits in about a week once you are in Uttarakhand, avoids the long Kedarnath trek, and still gives darshan at two of the four dhams: Yamunotri, shrine of Goddess Yamuna, and Gangotri, shrine of Goddess Ganga.
Gujarat is far from the Himalaya. Ahmedabad is roughly 950 km from Delhi and around 1,100 km from Haridwar, and Surat and Rajkot are further still. Driving yourself is not practical, so the usual plan is to reach Haridwar, Dehradun or Delhi by train or air and join a private road tour there. This page compares those routes city by city and lays out the full road itinerary.
One date matters for Gujarati families: Gangotri closes on Annakoot, the day after Diwali, which is also Bestu Varas, the Gujarati New Year. Yamunotri closes on Bhai Dooj soon after. If you want an autumn yatra, plan it between Navratri and Diwali, or travel in the summer vacation in May and June.

Flights from Ahmedabad and other airports reach Delhi in about two hours. Our Char Dham by train and by air guides go through both.
City-specific pages are also available for Ahmedabad and Surat.
All prices are per person on twin or triple sharing, for four people sharing one vehicle. Train or air travel from Gujarat is booked separately.

This plan starts when your train reaches Haridwar or your flight lands at Dehradun. If you are flying into Delhi, add a first night in Haridwar and a final drive back to Delhi.
Your driver receives you at Haridwar station, your hotel or Jolly Grant airport. The road climbs past Dehradun to Mussoorie and then down into the Yamuna valley through Naugaon. Reach Barkot by evening; dinner is served early so everyone can rest.
Leave early for Janki Chatti. Family members who prefer not to walk can hire ponies or palkis at the official counter. At the shrine, tie rice in a cloth and cook it in the Surya Kund for prasad, worship at the Divya Shila and take darshan of Yamuna Maa. Return to Barkot by evening.
Cross into the Bhagirathi valley. In Uttarkashi, visit the Kashi Vishwanath temple and the Shakti temple opposite it. The afternoon is free for rest.
Drive up through Gangnani, with its hot spring, and the apple country around Harsil. At Gangotri, offer prayers at the ghat, see the Bhagirath Shila and take darshan of Ganga Maa. Fill your Gangajal bottles before driving back to Uttarkashi.
Return through Chamba. Choose to stay in Rishikesh for the Triveni Ghat aarti or continue to Haridwar for Har Ki Pauri; either way the evening is yours.
Drop at Haridwar or Rishikesh station, or Jolly Grant airport, for your journey home to Gujarat. Shopping for prasad, rudraksha and Gangajal bottles is easy in the Haridwar bazaar before you leave.
Hotels serve simple north Indian vegetarian meals: dal, sabzi, roti and rice. Gujarati thalis are rare in the hills. We pass on requests for no onion-garlic or Jain-style food to the hotels, and most try to help, but carrying theplas, khakhras and dry snacks from home is wise.
Room rates on the route are modest: about ₹1,500–4,500 a night in the Yamunotri area and ₹1,800–5,500 in Uttarkashi. See Yamunotri hotels.
Land packages start from an estimated ₹12,500 per person if you join at Haridwar, or ₹14,500 from Delhi (Budget, four travellers). Train or air tickets from Gujarat are extra. Final prices depend on dates, hotels and group size.
Some long-distance trains run from Gujarat towards Haridwar, Rishikesh and Dehradun. Timings and days change, so check the railway schedule when you plan; we meet whichever train you take.
We request it from every hotel, and most can manage simple Jain-style meals. Choice is limited in the mountains, so carry dry snacks from home.
Gangotri closes on Annakoot, the day after Diwali, and Yamunotri on Bhai Dooj. They usually reopen on Akshaya Tritiya. See opening dates.
