Gangotri Yamunotri from Haridwar
- Two nights each in Barkot and Uttarkashi
- Last night in Haridwar or Rishikesh
- Private car with hill driver
The two river-goddess shrines of Uttarkashi district, Yamuna and Ganga, in a gentle six-day road journey from Haridwar. Shorter walking, smaller crowds and some of the prettiest valleys in Garhwal.
Both of India's holiest rivers begin their journey in the same district. The Yamuna rises below the Bandarpunch massif and is worshipped at Yamunotri (3,293 m); the Ganga, called the Bhagirathi here, is worshipped at Gangotri (3,100 m). A Gangotri Yamunotri yatra brings you to both, and it is often called the Do Dham of Uttarkashi. It is also the first half of the full Char Dham Yatra, so many pilgrims do it now and return for Kedarnath and Badrinath another year.
This trip is kinder on the body than the full circuit. Gangotri has a motor road to the temple, and Yamunotri needs only a 6 km walk from Janki Chatti, with ponies and palkis for those who prefer to ride. Drives are shorter, hotels are calmer and the scenery, from the Yamuna gorges to the deodar forests of Harsil, is quietly spectacular.
Estimated per-person prices for a group of four sharing one vehicle, with rooms on twin or triple sharing. Couples travelling alone pay more per head because the vehicle cost is split two ways; larger families in an Innova Crysta or Tempo Traveller pay less.

The plan visits Yamunotri first and Gangotri second, following the traditional order. From Delhi the trip simply adds a first night in Haridwar and a drive back to Delhi on the last day.
Set off from Haridwar or Rishikesh in the morning and climb through Dehradun to the hill town of Mussoorie. Beyond Kempty Falls the road descends to the Yamuna and follows it upstream through Naugaon. Barkot, with views of the Bandarpunch peaks, is your base for two nights.
An early drive takes you to Janki Chatti, the road head. The 6 km path climbs steadily through a narrow gorge, taking most walkers two and a half to three hours. At the top, tie rice or potatoes in cloth and cook them in the bubbling Surya Kund, touch the Divya Shila and take darshan of Goddess Yamuna. Return to Barkot by evening.
A relaxed morning, then a drive over the pine ridge between the Yamuna and Bhagirathi valleys. Uttarkashi is the district town and a spiritual centre in its own right. Visit the Kashi Vishwanath temple and the Shakti temple opposite it in the evening.
Drive up the Bhagirathi past Maneri, the hot spring at Gangnani and the apple orchards of Harsil. At Gangotri, take a dip at the ghat if the cold allows, see Bhagirath Shila where King Bhagirath is said to have meditated, and join darshan of Goddess Ganga. Return to Uttarkashi in the evening.
Drive down via Chamba and Tehri, with a view of the large Tehri lake on the way. Reach Rishikesh in the afternoon to see Ram Jhula and Laxman Jhula, or continue to Haridwar for the Ganga aarti at Har Ki Pauri.
After breakfast you are dropped at Haridwar or Rishikesh railway station, or at Jolly Grant airport in Dehradun about 35 km away. Guests on the Delhi plan drive back to Delhi instead, a journey of six to seven hours.
The only real exertion on this tour is the climb from Janki Chatti to the temple. The path is paved and busy, but steep in parts. Choose how you go up the evening before so your driver can drop you at the right point.
| Way up | Approximate cost | Good for |
|---|---|---|
