Salem is more than 2,000 km from the Himalaya, yet every season Tamil families make the journey. This page sets out the simplest way: one flight or train to Delhi, and a road tour that takes care of everything after that.
For a family in Salem, the Char Dham Yatra is the longest pilgrimage most will ever take. The distance to Delhi is roughly 2,200 km by rail, and the shrines lie another day beyond. It is very doable, though, once you break it into two parts: getting to Delhi, which you arrange, and the twelve days in Uttarakhand, which we arrange from the moment you land.
Our Char Dham land package from Delhi covers hotels, a private vehicle with a hill driver, breakfast and dinner, permits and tolls. You visit Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath in the traditional west-to-east order, and return to Delhi for your flight south. Families who have already seen Rameswaram will find Badrinath completes another of the four great dhams.

Salem's own airport has limited regional flights, so most people drive or take a bus to Bengaluru or Coimbatore. A train from Salem Junction suits elders who dislike flying, but it adds three days to the round trip. Whichever you choose, we recommend reaching Delhi the evening before Day 1 so that a late flight never eats into the first drive. Our Char Dham by air page explains flights into Dehradun as well.

Advice for travellers from Tamil Nadu
Food and language
Meals on the route are North Indian vegetarian: roti, dal, rice and sabzi. Idli and dosa are found in Haridwar and Rishikesh but rarely higher up. Plain rice and curd are usually available if you ask. Hindi is the common language; your driver will help with hotels and stalls.
Cold and altitude
Kedarnath at 3,583 m can be freezing at dawn even in June. Pack thermals, a down or fleece jacket, gloves and a woollen cap. Walk slowly, drink water and rest if you get a headache. Full list: things to carry.
