Already in Rishikesh for yoga, the ashrams or the river? Kedarnath is one long, beautiful drive up the Ganga and Mandakini from your door, and four days is all it takes to go and come back.
The highway to Kedarnath leaves the plains at Rishikesh. Everything north of the town is hill road, so starting here rather than Haridwar shaves about 25 km and half an hour off the first day, and lets you skip the Haridwar traffic entirely. For many travellers it also fits the trip they are already on: a week of yoga in Tapovan, a retreat on the riverbank, or a family holiday that now wants a pilgrimage at its heart.
Our Rishikesh package is the same proven 3-night plan we run from Haridwar: Guptkashi on the first night, Kedarnath on the second, back to Guptkashi on the third, and down to Rishikesh on day four. The difference is the pick-up. Your driver comes to your ashram, guest house or hotel, whether that is in Tapovan, near Laxman Jhula, along the Haridwar road, or at Yog Nagari Rishikesh railway station.

Itinerary: Rishikesh to Kedarnath in 3 nights
Day 1
Rishikesh to Guptkashi
About 175 km6–7 hoursNight: Guptkashi / Sitapur
Your car arrives at your Rishikesh address around 6:30 am. Within minutes you are climbing above the river past Shivpuri's rafting beaches, and by mid-morning you reach the sangam at Devprayag. From Rudraprayag the road turns into the Mandakini gorge, past Agastyamuni, to Guptkashi, where you check in with views across to Ukhimath.
Day 2
Gaurikund trek to the Kedarnath shrine
30 km drive + 16 km trek6–9 hours on footNight: Kedarnath
Leave in the dark to reach Sonprayag early, show your registration, and take the shared jeep to Gaurikund. The trail climbs steadily through forest and then open meadow, and the temple appears quite suddenly over the last rise. Rest, warm up with tea, and join the evening aarti before an early night at altitude.

Day 3
Morning darshan and descent
16 km trek + 30 km driveFull dayNight: Guptkashi / Sitapur
Morning darshan is the quietest of the day, especially if you are in line by 4:30 am. Walk to Bhairavnath temple for the view down the valley, then begin the walk down after breakfast. Your driver waits at Sonprayag and takes you back to a hot shower at Guptkashi.
Day 4
Guptkashi to Rishikesh
About 175 km6–7 hoursNight: Drop in Rishikesh
Drive back down the valleys you came up, with time for a stop at Dhari Devi temple near Srinagar if the group wishes. You reach Rishikesh by mid-afternoon, early enough for the Ganga aarti at Triveni Ghat or Parmarth. Airport and Haridwar drops can be added on request.
Flying in? Land at Jolly Grant by the previous evening, stay in Rishikesh, and start fresh. Starting the mountain drive straight off an early flight usually means reaching Guptkashi after dark.

Pairing Kedarnath with your time in Rishikesh
Before the yatra
A few days of yoga and walking in Rishikesh is surprisingly good preparation. Gentle hikes to Kunjapuri or along the river trails build the stamina the 16 km climb needs, and you start the mountain drive rested rather than straight off a train.
After the yatra
Your legs will thank you for a quiet day afterwards. Ayurvedic massage centres and riverside cafes are everywhere in Tapovan. Rafting is best saved for before the trek, when your knees are fresh.
Leaving your luggage
Most Rishikesh guest houses will hold your main bag for a few days. Take only a small bag to Guptkashi and an even smaller daypack up to Kedarnath.
Things to know before you set out
Register online for free at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in; the QR slip is checked at Sonprayag. See yatra registration.
Shuttle helicopter seats from Phata, Sersi and Guptkashi are sold only on IRCTC HeliYatra; read our IRCTC booking guide. We do not sell shuttle tickets.
Avoid July and August if you can; monsoon landslides close the Rudraprayag–Gaurikund road for hours at a time.
Carry thermals and a down jacket even in June; Kedarnath dips close to zero at night.
Keep ₹5,000–10,000 cash per person for jeeps, ponies and food on the trail.

Shuttles fly from Phata, Sersi and Guptkashi, so you still drive to the helipad. Charters fly from Dehradun; see Char Dham by helicopter from Rishikesh for the bigger circuit.
Do foreigners need anything extra?
Foreign nationals register on the same portal with their passport details. The rest of the trip is the same.
