Kedarnath Yatra Hotel Booking 2027

Accommodation is the tightest part of any Kedarnath plan. Rooms at the temple are few and basic, so the right base town below matters just as much. This guide explains both.

  • Temple stays from ₹2,500
  • Base towns from ₹2,000
  • Rooms, tents and dorms
  • Booked with your yatra plan

Kedarnath Yatra Hotel Booking 2027

Two stays, two very different experiences

A typical Kedarnath yatra involves two kinds of accommodation. The first is a night at Kedarnath, 3,583 m up at the head of the Mandakini valley, reached only on foot, by pony, palki or helicopter. Everything there arrives by mule or by air, so rooms are basic whatever you pay. The second is one or two nights in a base town on the road below, where hotels are larger, warmer and more comfortable.

You do not have to stay at the temple. Fit walkers sometimes go up and down in a single long day, and helicopter passengers often return the same afternoon. But a night at Kedarnath gives you the evening aarti, a quieter dawn darshan and time to rest at altitude, and most of our packages include it. The trick is to book early: in May and June, rooms near the temple sell out weeks ahead.

Staying at Kedarnath temple

Since the town was rebuilt, accommodation at Kedarnath is spread along the approach to the temple and the slopes around it. Options fall into three groups.

TypeWhat you getEstimated rate
Dormitory / shared hallBed and blankets in a shared room, common toiletsLowest; often per bed
Tent or prefab cottagePrivate tent or hut for 2–4, bedding, shared or attached toilet₹2,500 – 4,000 per unit
Guest house roomSmall private room, attached bath, hot water by bucket or geyser₹3,500 – 6,000 per room

Estimates per night in the main season. Rates vary sharply with demand; peak weekends and festival days cost the most.

  • GMVN operates huts and tents at Kedarnath, booked through its own website; private guest houses are booked through agents like us or directly.
  • Heating is limited; expect heavy quilts rather than room heaters.
  • Electricity and hot water can be intermittent; carry a torch and power bank.
  • Food is simple vegetarian fare from dhabas and the guest house kitchen.
  • Bags: carry a small backpack only; leave main luggage in your vehicle below.

Choosing a base town below Kedarnath

The road ends at Sonprayag; from there a shared jeep runs the last 5 km to Gaurikund, where the trek starts. Your base town decides how early you must leave for the trek or the helipad.

BaseDistance to SonprayagCharacterBest for
GuptkashiAbout 30 kmLargest town, widest choice, views of ChaukhambaMost groups, helicopter from Guptkashi
Phata / SersiAbout 10–15 kmSmall villages on the highway, near helipadsShuttle helicopter passengers
Sitapur / RampurAbout 3–5 kmHotels lining the road just below SonprayagTrekkers who want an early start
Sonprayag / Gaurikund0–5 kmBasic lodges, crowded in seasonLate arrivals, budget travellers
UkhimathAbout 40 kmQuiet town with the winter seat of KedarnathCombining with Chopta and Tungnath

Rates in these towns run from about ₹2,000 for a budget double to around ₹6,500 for the best rooms in Guptkashi or Sitapur. For the helicopter, match your hotel to your ticket: a Phata ticket with a Guptkashi hotel means an early drive, and vice versa. Our Phata helicopter guide and Guptkashi helicopter guide explain the helipads.

How the nights fit together: trek vs helicopter

The same family can need very different rooms depending on how they reach the temple. These are the two patterns we book most often.

Trekking or riding a pony

  1. Night 1, Guptkashi or Sitapur. Arrive from Haridwar, rest, and leave your big bags in the vehicle.
  2. Night 2, Kedarnath. Trek up from Gaurikund, check in by late afternoon, attend the aarti.
  3. Night 3, Guptkashi or Sitapur. Dawn darshan, walk down, sleep in a proper bed with hot water.

Flying with IRCTC shuttle tickets

  1. Night 1, near your helipad. Phata or Sersi for those helipads, Guptkashi for the Guptkashi pad. Report early for your slot.
  2. Same-day visit or a night at the temple. With a same-day return ticket you fly back after darshan; with separate up and down dates, book a Kedarnath room in between.
  3. Night 2, back at the base. Most helicopter guests then continue to Badrinath or return towards Haridwar.

If shuttle seats do not come through, the trekking pattern takes over and we adjust the bookings. Read the IRCTC helicopter booking guide to understand the process before the window opens.

Kedarnath packages with hotels included

Booking the temple night and the base hotel separately, and matching both to your trek or helicopter day, is the part most families find stressful. Our packages handle all of it together.

Tips for a good night at Kedarnath

  • Reach Kedarnath by 4–5 pm so you can check in, rest and attend the aarti.
  • Altitude affects sleep; drink water, eat light and avoid alcohol and smoking.
  • Pack thermals, a woollen cap, gloves and warm socks for the night.
  • Keep your yatra registration QR and photo ID with you; checks happen at Sonprayag.
  • If you have IRCTC shuttle tickets, book the base hotel close to your helipad.
  • Beware of websites claiming to sell Kedarnath helicopter tickets; shuttle seats are sold only on the IRCTC HeliYatra portal.

Kedarnath hotel booking: FAQ

Should I stay at Kedarnath or go up and down in one day?

A night at the temple is easier on the body and lets you attend the aarti. Very fit walkers and helicopter passengers sometimes do a same-day visit.

Which is the best base town for Kedarnath?

Guptkashi for choice and comfort, Sitapur for an early trek start, and Phata or Sersi if you are flying from those helipads.

Are there luxury hotels at Kedarnath?

No. Even the best rooms at the temple are simple. Luxury packages use the best available stay at Kedarnath and better hotels in Guptkashi.

How early should I book a Kedarnath hotel?

For May and June, four to eight weeks ahead. September and October are easier but still busy at weekends.

Can I book GMVN tents through you?

GMVN accommodation is booked on GMVN's own website. We book private guest houses and can plan your trip around a GMVN booking you already hold.

Do hotels at Kedarnath have heaters?

Rarely. Expect heavy quilts and cold nights. Bring thermals and a warm cap.
