Badrinath Yatra by Car 2027

Why go to Badrinath by car

Badrinath is the one dham where a car takes you all the way. There is no trek, no shuttle jeep and no helicopter queue between you and the temple. That makes a private vehicle the natural choice: you leave when you are ready, stop for tea at a confluence that catches your eye, and have room for warm clothes, medicines and the puja samagri your family insists on carrying.

A car tour also handles changes gracefully. If the highway is held up near Chamoli for an hour, your driver simply waits with you or takes a lunch break early; you are not tied to a bus timetable. For elderly parents, the ability to halt every couple of hours makes a real difference. And for groups of five or more, the cost per person compares well with a seat on a yatra bus.

On these hill roads comfort matters more than on the plains. The Innova Crysta is the favourite for families because of its suspension and higher seating; read more on Innova Crysta booking. Larger groups should look at a Tempo Traveller.

Sample road plan from Delhi: 4 nights / 5 days

Most car bookings start from Delhi NCR, so here is that version. From Haridwar or Rishikesh, simply skip day 1 and finish on day 4 back where you started.

  1. Day
    1

    Delhi to Haridwar

    230 km6–7 hoursNight: Haridwar

The driver collects you from home, a hotel or the airport and takes the Meerut expressway route north. A mid-morning start gets you to Haridwar by afternoon. Check in, rest, and walk down to Har Ki Pauri for the evening Ganga aarti, a fitting start to a pilgrimage.

  2. Day
    2

    Haridwar to Joshimath

    275 km9–10 hoursNight: Joshimath

Leave early, because this is the long climb. You pass Rishikesh and then drive beside the river through Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag and Nandprayag, with halts wherever the family needs them. Joshimath, at around 1,900 m, is reached by evening.

  3. Day
    3

    Badrinath darshan and Mana village

    45 km + 6 kmHalf dayNight: Badrinath

Drive up past Vishnuprayag and Pandukeshwar to Badrinath. Bathe at the Tapt Kund, offer prayers at the temple, and in the afternoon take the car to Mana for Vyas Gufa, Ganesh Gufa and Bhim Pul. Return for the evening aarti and an early night near the temple.

  4. Day
    4

    Badrinath to Srinagar Garhwal

    About 160–195 km6–8 hoursNight: Srinagar / Rudraprayag

An optional early darshan or rites at Brahma Kapal come first. Then the car winds back down the valley, and the temperature rises with every hour. You spend the night in Srinagar Garhwal or Rudraprayag.

  5. Day
    5

    Srinagar Garhwal to Delhi

About 360 km10–11 hoursNight: Tour ends

Start soon after breakfast to clear the hills before the afternoon traffic. After Rishikesh and Haridwar the road flattens out for the run to Delhi. Expect to reach home or your hotel in the evening; airport drops should be for a late flight.

What your driver does for you

On a car tour the driver is your most important companion. Ours are hill drivers who have done the Badrinath road many times, and they do much more than steer.

  • Plans each day's start time around the distance, the weather and your darshan wishes.
  • Knows clean places for tea and lunch, and where the toilets are usable.
  • Keeps an eye on road updates and waits out a landslide hold-up safely rather than taking risks.
  • Helps with luggage at hotels and parks as close to the temple bridge as rules allow.
  • Does not drive after dark on mountain stretches; please respect this, as it is for your safety.

Road tips for the Badrinath highway

Driving hours

Hill drivers prefer to be off the road by dusk. Starting early means you reach each night stop in daylight, which is safer and leaves time to rest. Expect average speeds of 25–35 km an hour in the hills.

Self-drive or hired car?

You can drive your own car, but the highway has long cliff-edge stretches, steep hairpins and frequent roadworks. Most families prefer a local hill driver, and we strongly recommend one if nobody in your group has mountain driving experience.

Monsoon and closures

From July to mid-September landslides can stop traffic for hours. Keep a buffer day and read best time to visit before fixing dates. Registration is required for every passenger; see the registration guide.

  • Carry motion-sickness tablets; the road has many bends.
  • Keep warm clothes in the cabin, not buried in the boot.
  • Download offline maps; mobile signal drops between towns.
  • Pack using our things to carry list.

Badrinath by car: FAQ

Can a car go all the way to Badrinath temple?

Cars reach Badrinath town. From the parking area the temple is a short walk across the Alaknanda bridge.

Which car is best for a Badrinath trip?

For four people with elders, an Innova Crysta is the most comfortable. A Dzire suits couples and small families on a budget; groups of 8–17 should take a Tempo Traveller.

How much does Badrinath by car cost from Delhi?

As a full package with hotels, estimated from ₹10,500 per person for four travellers on budget hotels over 4 nights / 5 days. Car-only quotes are given for your dates.

Can I take my own car to Badrinath?

Yes, private cars are allowed, and every traveller still needs the yatra registration. Only do it if someone in your group is comfortable on narrow mountain roads.

Is the driver's food and stay included?

Yes. The driver allowance, his food and night stay are part of our price; you do not pay him separately.

Can we extend the car trip to Kedarnath?

Yes. Adding Kedarnath makes it a Do Dham by car trip of about six days from Haridwar.

How many hours do we drive each day?

The longest day is Haridwar to Joshimath, about 9–10 hours with stops. Other days are 2 to 7 hours, except the final run back to Delhi.
