No train, no flight. Chandigarh is close enough for the car to collect you from your gate in the Tricity and take the short hill route via Paonta Sahib straight to the Yamuna valley.
Most pilgrims reach Yamunotri by first travelling to Haridwar or Dehradun. From Chandigarh there is a quicker way. The road through Nahan and Paonta Sahib crosses into Uttarakhand at the Yamuna and climbs via Vikasnagar straight to Barkot, the base for Yamunotri. It is roughly 250 km, a long but very doable first day. After darshan the tour crosses to Uttarkashi for Gangotri, then returns through Rishikesh and Haridwar so you finish with the Ganga aarti before heading home.
Because Chandigarh is within easy road distance of the hills, there are no train tickets to chase and no luggage to haul through stations. The same car and driver stay with you from the first morning to the moment they drop you back at your door in Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula or Zirakpur.
There are two practical approaches, and the right one depends on your group and the season.
| Route | Distance to Barkot | Why choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Chandigarh – Nahan – Paonta Sahib – Vikasnagar – Barkot | About 250 km | Shortest; skips Haridwar on the way up; a chance to stop at Gurudwara Paonta Sahib |
| Chandigarh – Saharanpur – Dehradun – Mussoorie – Barkot | About 310 km | Smoother in parts; passes Mussoorie and Kempty Falls |
On the way back we come down the Bhagirathi to Rishikesh and Haridwar, then drive about 200 km across to Chandigarh via Saharanpur and Yamunanagar. That makes the trip a loop, so you see different country each way. Our route map shows how the valleys connect.
Our published 2027 estimates are for tours that start in Haridwar or Delhi. A pick-up from your home in Chandigarh is quoted for your dates and group; it is usually close to the Delhi package level because the extra driving is similar. Prices are per person for four travellers sharing a vehicle and twin or triple rooms.

Your driver collects you from home before sunrise. The road crosses the Shivalik hills to Nahan and Paonta Sahib, where many travellers stop to bow at the gurudwara on the Yamuna. From Vikasnagar the route climbs into the mountains and follows the river to Barkot.
Drive to Janki Chatti and climb the 6 km path to Yamunotri on foot, on a pony or in a palki. At the shrine, cook rice in Surya Kund, pray at the Divya Shila and take darshan of Goddess Yamuna. Walk back down in the afternoon and return to Barkot.
Cross the forested ridge to the Bhagirathi. Uttarkashi is a lively district town with a temple to Lord Shiva as Kashi Vishwanath. Spend a quiet evening by the river.
The road follows the Bhagirathi past the Gangnani hot spring and the valley of Harsil, famous for its apples and deodar forest. At Gangotri, offer prayers to Ma Ganga and walk to Bhagirath Shila. Drive back to Uttarkashi for the night.
Descend via Chamba and Tehri lake to Rishikesh, then on to Haridwar. Join the Ganga aarti at Har Ki Pauri, or stay in Rishikesh for the quieter aarti on the ghats there.
After breakfast, drive west via Roorkee, Saharanpur and Yamunanagar. You are home in the Tricity by mid-afternoon, with Gangajal and prasad for the family.
Hotels around Barkot and Janki Chatti cost roughly ₹1,500–4,500 per room per night; in Uttarkashi, ₹1,800–5,500. Read more on Yamunotri hotels and Gangotri hotels.
Also from Chandigarh: Char Dham, Kedarnath, Do Dham and Teen Dham.
