From the beaches of Vizag to the snowline of the Garhwal Himalaya: a journey of nearly 2,000 km and 3,500 vertical metres, planned so that your body and your family keep up.
Devotees in Visakhapatnam grow up close to the hill shrine of Simhachalam, and many families feel a strong pull towards Badrinath, Lord Vishnu's great Himalayan seat, and Kedarnath, the Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva. The journey north is long: about 1,750 km by rail to Delhi, or a flight of around two and a half hours, sometimes with a connection.
The bigger change, though, is altitude. Vizag sits at sea level; Kedarnath is at 3,583 m and Badrinath at 3,133 m. Our 6-night, 7-day plan from Delhi is built to let you rise in steps: a night in Haridwar on the plains, two nights at Guptkashi around 1,300 m, then the shrine nights. That pacing is the reason we do not recommend squeezing the trip into fewer days from a coastal city.

Families from coastal Andhra frequently travel in groups of eight or more. A Tempo Traveller then becomes the cheapest way to move together. Those who want all four shrines can look at the Char Dham from Visakhapatnam, and those short on leave at the Kedarnath package from Vizag.

Day-wise route from Delhi
Day 1
Delhi to Haridwar (plains)
230 km6–7 hoursNight: Haridwar
Our driver meets you at the airport or station. The flat drive to Haridwar is a gentle first day after the long journey from the coast. In the evening, sit on the ghats for the Ganga aarti and sleep at near-plains altitude.
Day 2
Haridwar to Guptkashi (≈1,300 m)
200 km7–8 hoursNight: Guptkashi
The first climb of the trip. You pass Rishikesh, then Devprayag where two rivers form the Ganga, and Rudraprayag where the Mandakini joins. At Guptkashi you sleep around 1,300 m, which helps the body start adjusting. Drink plenty of water and avoid heavy meals.
Day 3
Up to Kedarnath (3,583 m)
30 km + 16 kmFull dayNight: Kedarnath
From Sonprayag, take the jeep to Gaurikund and climb the trail at a slow, steady pace. Coastal travellers often find the last few kilometres breathless; a pony for the upper section is a sensible choice. IRCTC shuttle passengers fly from Phata, Sersi or Guptkashi. Overnight at Kedarnath.
Day 4
Darshan and down to Guptkashi
16 km + 30 kmFull dayNight: Guptkashi
Take darshan at dawn, then walk around the temple to the Samadhi of Adi Shankaracharya. Losing height on the way down quickly eases any altitude discomfort. The car waits at Sonprayag to take you back to Guptkashi.

Day 5
Guptkashi to Badrinath (3,133 m)
200 km8–9 hoursNight: Badrinath
Cross via Ukhimath and the Chopta forests, then follow the Alaknanda upstream past Chamoli and Joshimath. Having already slept at Kedarnath, you will find Badrinath's altitude easier. Bathe in the Tapt Kund hot spring and attend the evening aarti.
Day 6
Badrinath darshan, Mana, Srinagar
About 195 km7–8 hoursNight: Srinagar Garhwal
Morning darshan of Badri Narayan, then Mana village with Vyas Gufa and Bhim Pul. Rites for ancestors can be performed at Brahma Kapal. Descend in the afternoon to Srinagar Garhwal, back in thicker air.
Day 7
Srinagar Garhwal to Delhi
About 360 km10–11 hoursNight: Tour ends
The long drive down passes Rishikesh and Haridwar before the plains. You reach Delhi in the evening; we drop you at a hotel, the airport or the station. Book onward travel to Vizag for the following day if possible.
Altitude advice for coastal travellers
Mild headache and breathlessness are common above 3,000 m. Rest, drink water and walk slowly.
Severe headache, vomiting or confusion are warning signs: descend and seek medical help at once. Medical posts operate along the Kedarnath route in season.
See a doctor before the trip if you have heart, lung or blood-pressure conditions.
Avoid alcohol and smoking on the yatra; both worsen altitude effects.
Budget hotels are clean and simple, with attached bathrooms and hot water by bucket or geyser. Deluxe moves you into better-rated properties with more space, which matters after a long day on the road. Luxury uses the best available hotels on the route and adds all meals. At Kedarnath every category means basic guest houses or tents, so the difference between plans shows mostly at Guptkashi, Badrinath and Haridwar. For a closer look, read about Kedarnath stays and compare our deluxe packages.

Visakhapatnam to Kedarnath and Badrinath: FAQ
What is the full journey from Vizag to the Kedarnath temple?
Roughly 1,750 km by rail to Delhi, then about 460 km by road to Sonprayag and the 16 km trek from Gaurikund. Most people fly to Delhi and drive from there.
Will we get altitude sickness coming from the coast?
Some people feel mild symptoms at Kedarnath. Our plan rises in steps, with two nights at Guptkashi, which reduces the risk. Walk slowly, drink water and tell your driver if anyone feels unwell.
Can we start from Hyderabad instead?
Yes. Many Vizag travellers connect through Hyderabad. See Do Dham from Hyderabad for that city's planning tips.
How much should a family of four budget?
From ₹15,500 per person for the land tour on budget hotels, plus flights or trains and costs such as a pony or helicopter ticket. We give an exact land quote for your dates.
Do you serve Andhra food on the trip?
Hotels in the hills cook North Indian vegetarian meals. Rice is easy to find, but many families bring their own pickles and podis.
