Two ways to do the Char Dham from Delhi

The four dhams lie about 230 km beyond Haridwar, which is itself a six to seven hour drive from Delhi. That leaves Delhi pilgrims with a simple choice: let the yatra vehicle come to Delhi, or make your own way to Haridwar and start there.

Delhi to Delhi in 12 days

   Delhi to Haridwar

   230 km6–7 hoursNight: Haridwar

   An early pick-up beats the city traffic. The expressway and highway via Meerut and Roorkee bring you to Haridwar by afternoon. Check in, rest, then join the crowds at Har Ki Pauri for the lamp-lit evening aarti. It is the traditional way to begin a Char Dham Yatra.

   Haridwar to Barkot

   210 km7–8 hoursNight: Barkot

   Head into the hills via Dehradun and the Mussoorie ridge. The air cools noticeably as you climb. Descend to the Yamuna valley and reach Barkot by evening.

   Yamunotri

   45 km + 6 km trekFull dayNight: Barkot

   Drive to Janki Chatti and walk or ride the 6 km to Yamunotri. Offer prayers and take a dip in the hot water kund near the temple. Return to Barkot tired but happy.

   Barkot to Uttarkashi

   100 km4–5 hoursNight: Uttarkashi

   A short drive gives your legs a break. Uttarkashi is a lively town on the Bhagirathi. Visit the Vishwanath and Shakti temples in the evening.

   Gangotri

   100 km each wayFull dayNight: Uttarkashi

   Drive up the Bhagirathi valley to Gangotri, passing Gangnani and Harsil. Take darshan of Goddess Ganga and fill a bottle of Gangajal. Return to Uttarkashi by dusk.

   Uttarkashi to Guptkashi

   220 km8–9 hoursNight: Guptkashi / Sitapur

   A full day on the road via Tehri and Srinagar. You meet the Alaknanda and then follow the Mandakini upstream. Arrive at Guptkashi or Sitapur in the evening.

   Kedarnath

   30 km + 16 km trek6–8 hours walkingNight: Kedarnath

   Drive to Sonprayag, ride the shared jeep to Gaurikund and start the 16 km climb. Ponies, palkis and pithoos are available; IRCTC shuttle ticket holders fly instead. Night at Kedarnath after the evening aarti.

   Kedarnath to Guptkashi

   16 km trek + 30 kmFull dayNight: Guptkashi / Sitapur

   Darshan in the early morning when queues are shorter. Walk down to Gaurikund and drive back to Guptkashi. A hot meal and an early night.

   Guptkashi to Badrinath

   200 km8–9 hoursNight: Badrinath

   Drive across via Ukhimath and Chopta to the Alaknanda valley. Climb past Joshimath to Badrinath. Tapt Kund bath and evening aarti.

    Badrinath and Mana

    160 km6–7 hoursNight: Rudraprayag / Srinagar

    Morning darshan of Badri Narayan, the last of the four dhams. Visit Mana village, Vyas Gufa and Bhim Pul. Drive down to Rudraprayag or Srinagar.

    Rudraprayag to Haridwar

    165 km6–7 hoursNight: Haridwar

    Follow the river down via Devprayag and Rishikesh. Afternoon free in Haridwar for shopping or a dip at the ghats. Overnight in Haridwar.

    Haridwar to Delhi

    230 km6–7 hoursNight: Tour ends

    Drive back to Delhi after breakfast. Drop at your home, a station or the airport. The yatra ends by evening.
