Many Madurai families have already been to Rameswaram, one of the four dhams of all India. The Himalayan Char Dham is the other great circuit, and with a flight to Delhi it fits into under two weeks.
Adi Shankaracharya's original Char Dham are Badrinath in the north, Puri in the east, Dwarka in the west and Rameswaram in the south. Pilgrims from Madurai live a short drive from Rameswaram, so the northern dham, Badrinath, is often the one they most want to complete. The Uttarakhand circuit, sometimes called the Chota Char Dham, adds Yamunotri, Gangotri and Kedarnath to Badrinath, and that is the yatra described here.
Madurai is about 2,600 km from Delhi. Trains take around two days, so most families fly to Delhi, directly or via Chennai or Bengaluru depending on the season's schedule. Our Char Dham package from Delhi then takes over, with a driver waiting at the airport.

Tips for Tamil Nadu pilgrims
Food
Hotels on the route serve North Indian vegetarian meals: roti, dal, rice and sabzi. Curd rice is usually possible on request, but sambar and idli are rare. Carry podi, pickle and ready-to-eat mixes from home.
Cold weather
Even in June, early mornings at Kedarnath and Badrinath are close to freezing; check the best time to visit before fixing dates. Pack thermals, a heavy jacket, monkey cap, gloves and woollen socks. See our things to carry list.
Language
Hindi is the language of the route, and few local people speak Tamil. A few Hindi words go a long way, and our helpline stays reachable on WhatsApp throughout the trip.
Registration and helicopter
Registration is free and mandatory; see our registration guide. Kedarnath shuttle helicopter tickets are sold only on IRCTC HeliYatra; read our IRCTC helicopter guide.
