Pawan Hans is a Government of India enterprise that operates helicopters across the country, from offshore oil platforms to hill states. Because of that public-sector background, many families assume that booking with Pawan Hans is a separate, official channel to Kedarnath. It is not. For the Kedarnath shuttle, public-sector and private operators alike sell through one system, the IRCTC HeliYatra portal, and only after the traveller has completed yatra registration.

Whether Pawan Hans flies a Kedarnath helipad in a particular season depends on that year's allotment. When the 2027 bookings open, the portal will show which operator serves Guptkashi, Phata and Sersi. The fare is fixed for each helipad, so the company name does not change what you pay. What a Kedarnath shuttle costs

Book as early as the phase allows. In May and June, seats for weekends and the first fortnight after the temple opening can disappear within hours, while late September and October usually leave more room.

One detail catches many families out: every name on the ticket must already hold a yatra registration, and the ID used while booking must be the one carried on the day. Seats sold out? Five realistic alternatives

Every season some pilgrims miss out on shuttle seats. That does not end the yatra. The path to Kedarnath has carried pilgrims for centuries, and there are good ways up for almost every age and fitness level.

Pony, palki and pithoo rates are fixed by the local administration and change each season. Pay only at the official counters in Gaurikund or Sonprayag and keep the receipt.

If you end up walking: tips for the Gaurikund path

• Start early. The shared jeep from Sonprayag to Gaurikund (5 km) runs from early morning, and the path is cooler before 10 am.
• Walk at a steady pace and stop for a minute every half hour rather than rushing and resting long.
• Drink water and eat small snacks; tea stalls line the route.
• Carry a rain jacket even on a sunny day, and a warm layer for the top.
• Sleep at Kedarnath if you can, rather than going up and down in one day.
