Kedarnath Yatra
- Guptkashi and Kedarnath stays
- Trek, pony or IRCTC shuttle
- Private car from Haridwar
One shrine, chosen with care, reached without rushing. Pick Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri or Yamunotri and we build a short road trip around it from Haridwar or Delhi.
"Ek" is one. An Ek Dham Yatra is a pilgrimage to a single one of Uttarakhand's four Himalayan shrines instead of the full circuit. It is the choice of working families with a long weekend, of elders who want to see Kedarnath or Badrinath once in their lives without twelve days on mountain roads, and of pilgrims who have already done the Char Dham Yatra and want to return to one temple.
Most single-dham travellers go to Kedarnath, the Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva at 3,583 m, reached by a 16 km trek or a helicopter shuttle. The second favourite is Badrinath, the seat of Lord Vishnu as Badri Narayan, where the road runs right into town. Smaller numbers travel to Gangotri or Yamunotri alone, often as a short trip from Haridwar or Dehradun.
The four shrines are very different experiences. The table below is a quick way to match a dham to your group's age, fitness and time.
| Dham | Deity | Altitude | How you reach the temple | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kedarnath | Lord Shiva (Jyotirlinga) | 3,583 m | 16 km trek from Gaurikund, pony, palki or helicopter | Fit pilgrims, Shiva devotees |
| Badrinath | Lord Vishnu (Badri Narayan) | 3,133 m | Road to town, short walk to temple | Elders, families with children |
| Gangotri | Goddess Ganga | 3,100 m | Road to the temple | A gentle first Himalayan trip |
| Yamunotri | Goddess Yamuna | 3,293 m | 6 km trek from Janki Chatti | Those who can manage a short climb |
If walking is a concern, Badrinath is the easiest. If Kedarnath is the dream but the trek is not, plan around an IRCTC shuttle seat, or read about the Ek Dham helicopter yatra from Dehradun. Two shrines in one week? Look at the Do Dham Yatra instead.
All figures are per person on twin or triple sharing for a group of four sharing one vehicle, with budget hotels unless the column says otherwise. Couples pay a little more per head; groups of six to twelve pay less.

2027 estimates. The final quote depends on travel dates, hotel category and group size. Helicopter tickets, pony, palki and the Sonprayag–Gaurikund jeep are paid separately.
Your driver collects you in Haridwar or Rishikesh soon after sunrise. The road climbs beside the Ganga to Devprayag and then follows the Alaknanda to Rudraprayag, where you turn up the Mandakini. Guptkashi, facing the Chaukhamba massif, is your base for the night and the place to collect any shuttle paperwork.
A short drive brings you to Sonprayag, where private vehicles stop and shared jeeps run the last 5 km to Gaurikund. From here you walk, ride a pony or go by palki up the paved path to the temple. Pilgrims with IRCTC helicopter seats fly up from Phata, Sersi or Guptkashi instead. The evening aarti in the cold mountain air is the high point of the day.
Join the queue early for darshan of the Jyotirlinga. Walk up to Bhairavnath temple if your legs allow, and pay respects at the Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi behind the shrine. Then make the long walk down to Gaurikund and ride back to Guptkashi for a hot meal and sleep.
Drive back down the Mandakini and Alaknanda, pausing at Rudraprayag's confluence if you missed it on the way up. You reach Haridwar or Rishikesh by late afternoon. There is usually time for the Har Ki Pauri aarti before an evening train or bus.
This is the longest driving day, so you leave very early. The route passes four of the Panch Prayag: Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag and Nandprayag. Joshimath, seat of one of Adi Shankaracharya's four maths, is your stop for the night.
A short climb past Vishnuprayag brings you to Badrinath by mid-morning. Bathe at the Tapt Kund hot spring and take darshan of Badri Narayan. In the afternoon visit Mana village, 3 km on, with Vyas Gufa, Ganesh Gufa and Bhim Pul over the Saraswati. Return for the evening aarti.
A second early darshan is often quieter. Families who wish can offer pind daan for ancestors at Brahma Kapal on the river bank. Then drive down the Alaknanda to Rudraprayag or Srinagar Garhwal for the night.
A relaxed final drive past Devprayag and Rishikesh brings you to Haridwar by afternoon. Your driver drops you at your hotel, the station or the bus stand.
| Trip | Night stops | Room rates (per room per night, estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| Kedarnath | Guptkashi (2), Kedarnath (1) | Kedarnath ₹2,500–6,000; Guptkashi ₹2,000–6,500 |
| Badrinath | Joshimath (1), Badrinath (1), Srinagar (1) | Badrinath ₹2,000–8,000 |

| Yamunotri | Barkot (2), Mussoorie / Dehradun (1) | Barkot area ₹1,500–4,500 |
Rooms at Kedarnath are simple in every category, because building at the temple is limited. Read more on Kedarnath hotels and Badrinath hotels.
A pilgrimage to just one of the four Char Dham shrines: Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri or Yamunotri. It suits people with limited time or energy, and those returning to a favourite temple.
Kedarnath is the most chosen, for its Jyotirlinga and setting. Badrinath is the easiest because the road reaches the town. Gangotri is also road-accessible; Yamunotri needs a 6 km walk.
From about ₹8,500 per person for 3N/4D from Haridwar and ₹10,500 for 4N/5D from Delhi, for four people in budget hotels. Deluxe and luxury options are in the price table above. These are estimates.
