Jharkhand pilgrims who have walked to Baba Baidyanath at Deoghar already know the joy of a hard-won darshan. Here is how to plan the four Himalayan dhams from Ranchi, alone, as a family or as a colony group.
Every Shravan, lakhs of devotees walk the long kanwar route to Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. For many of them the next dream is Kedarnath, the Jyotirlinga set highest in the Himalaya, followed by Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. The two journeys have a lot in common: early starts, long walks and a darshan that feels earned.
Ranchi lies roughly 1,300 km from Delhi. The practical plan is to take an overnight-plus train or a two-hour flight to Delhi and join our Delhi Char Dham package. From there you travel by road for twelve days, staying in hotels we book and with a driver who knows the hills. Groups from the same mohalla, office or temple committee can share a Tempo Traveller and bring the cost down.
Ranchi, Hatia and nearby stations have direct trains to Delhi, mostly overnight and into the next day. Fast trains take about 17–18 hours; others take longer. Flights from Birsa Munda Airport reach Delhi in about two hours. If you prefer, connect on to Dehradun and start from Haridwar, skipping two highway days.
| Travel plan | Tour you join | Tour length |
|---|---|---|
| Train or flight to Delhi | Char Dham from Delhi | 11N / 12D |
| Flight to Dehradun via Delhi | Char Dham from Haridwar | 9N / 10D |
| Train to Haridwar via Delhi | Char Dham from Haridwar | 9N / 10D |
See Char Dham by train and Char Dham by air for how to time your arrival.
| Package | Duration | Budget | Deluxe | Luxury |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Char Dham from Delhi | 11N / 12D | ₹24,500 | ₹35,500 | ₹53,500 |
| Char Dham from Haridwar | 9N / 10D | ₹21,500 | ₹32,500 | ₹49,500 |
Large groups bring the price down sharply because the vehicle is shared. On the Haridwar budget package, ten to twelve travellers in a Tempo Traveller pay from about ₹19,500 each, against ₹27,500 for a couple travelling alone. A 17-seat Tempo Traveller can be hired for about ₹92,000 for ten days, and buses are available on request. See the Tempo Traveller page.
All prices are 2027 estimates, starting from. The final quote depends on dates, hotels and group size. Ranchi–Delhi travel, helicopter, pony and palki are extra.
Step off the train from Ranchi and meet the driver at the station. The drive to Haridwar takes most of the day with a lunch stop. The evening Ganga aarti is a short walk from most hotels.
Head for Dehradun and climb to Mussoorie. The road then drops into the valley of the Yamuna, lined with small villages and fields. Overnight at Barkot.
The walk from Janki Chatti to Yamunotri is short compared with the kanwar path, but steep. Ponies, palkis and pithoos are available. Darshan of Goddess Yamuna, a visit to Surya Kund, and back to Barkot.
A short drive across to the Bhagirathi valley. Settle into Uttarkashi by early afternoon. Visit the Kashi Vishwanath temple in the evening.
The road follows the river past Gangnani and Harsil to Gangotri temple. There is no trek; the temple is close to the parking area. Return to Uttarkashi after darshan and time at the ghats.
The day is spent on the road, passing Tehri lake on the way to the Mandakini valley. A group in a Tempo Traveller can make it fun with bhajans on the way. Reach your hotel by evening.
Take the jeep from Sonprayag to Gaurikund and start up the trail. Many Jharkhand walkers find the climb manageable after kanwar journeys, but the thin air makes it slower. Those with IRCTC shuttle tickets fly from Phata, Sersi or Guptkashi. Overnight near the temple.
Morning darshan of Baba Kedar, then Bhairavnath temple and the Samadhi of Adi Shankaracharya. Walk down to Gaurikund. Drive back to Guptkashi.
Cross via Ukhimath, Chopta's forests and Chamoli to Joshimath, then climb to Badrinath. Bathe in the warm Tapt Kund. Attend the evening aarti.
Darshan of Badri Narayan in the morning and rites at Brahma Kapal for those who wish. Visit Mana village and Bhim Pul. Drive down to Rudraprayag or Srinagar Garhwal.
See the confluence at Devprayag on the way down. Pass Rishikesh and reach Haridwar by afternoon. Free evening for shopping and the Ganga aarti.
Drive to Delhi for your train or flight back to Ranchi. Allow extra time for traffic entering the city. The tour ends at the station or airport.
Night stops: Haridwar (2), Barkot (2), Uttarkashi (2), Guptkashi or Sitapur (2), Kedarnath (1), Badrinath (1), Rudraprayag or Srinagar (1). At Kedarnath, rooms are basic for every category; see Kedarnath hotels.
From about ₹24,500 per person for four sharing on budget hotels from Delhi, plus your Ranchi–Delhi fare. Groups of 10–12 from Haridwar pay from about ₹19,500 each. These are 2027 estimates.
Trains suit groups and seniors, and cost less. Flights take about two hours and save a full day each way. Both connect to our Delhi package.
Around 14–15 days including travel from Ranchi to Delhi and back. The road tour itself is 12 days.
