Badrinath from Chennai
- Delhi airport pick-up
- Devprayag on the route
- Night at Badrinath
For Sri Vaishnava families, Badrinath is a Divya Desam; for Shaiva devotees, Kedarnath is a Jyotirlinga. Either way, the journey from Chennai begins with a flight north.
Few Himalayan shrines are as closely tied to south India as Badrinath. Adi Shankaracharya, born in Kerala, is credited with re-establishing worship there, and the temple's chief priest traditionally comes from a Namboodiri family of Kerala. Badrinath and Devprayag are also counted among the 108 Divya Desams, which is why so many families from Tamil Nadu make the journey at least once. Kedarnath, the highest Jyotirlinga, draws Shaiva pilgrims from across the state.
Chennai is roughly 2,200 km from Delhi, so we recommend flying. Our driver meets you at Delhi airport and the 4N/5D road plan runs to Badrinath or Kedarnath and back. If you prefer to fly to Dehradun, the shorter Haridwar package from ₹8,500 applies.
| Option | Arrive at | Approx. time | Join |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flight | Delhi | 2.5–3 hours | 4N/5D Delhi plan, from ₹10,500 |
| Flight (often via a connection) | Dehradun | 4–7 hours | 3N/4D Haridwar plan, from ₹8,500 |
| Train | Delhi | 30–35 hours | 4N/5D Delhi plan |
| Train | Haridwar (limited services) | Longer | 3N/4D Haridwar plan |
A morning flight from Chennai lands in Delhi before lunch, which leaves time to reach Haridwar the same evening. Elders who dislike flying sometimes take the long train; if so, rest a night in Delhi before starting. See our train guide and air guide.
The answer usually depends on the oldest member of the group. Badrinath is reached by road all the way into town, the temple is a short walk from most hotels, and the only real effort is the long drive and the cold. It is the natural choice for grandparents and for families whose tradition is Vaishnava.
Kedarnath asks more of the body. The 16 km climb from Gaurikund rises to 3,583 m, and the night at the temple is cold even in June. Fit adults walk it in six to eight hours; others ride a pony or go by palki at rates fixed by the local administration each season. A limited number of helicopter shuttle seats are released on the IRCTC HeliYatra portal. If your group is mixed, one practical plan is to send the walkers up on foot while elders use the shuttle or a palki.
