If this is your first time planning the pilgrimage to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath, start here. This guide explains the shrines, the route, the time and money it takes, and the steps to get ready.
"Char Dham" means four abodes. The Char Dham of Uttarakhand, sometimes called the Chota Char Dham to distinguish it from the all-India circuit of Badrinath, Dwarka, Puri and Rameswaram, is a pilgrimage to four high Himalayan temples in the Garhwal region. Two honour the sacred rivers, one honours Lord Shiva and one Lord Vishnu. Together they draw pilgrims from every corner of India each summer and autumn.
| Shrine | Deity | Altitude | How you reach it | District |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yamunotri | Goddess Yamuna | 3,293 m | 6 km trek from Janki Chatti | Uttarkashi |
| Gangotri | Goddess Ganga | 3,100 m | Road to the temple | Uttarkashi |
| Kedarnath | Lord Shiva (Jyotirlinga) | 3,583 m | 16 km trek from Gaurikund or helicopter | Rudraprayag |
| Badrinath | Lord Vishnu (Badri Narayan) | 3,133 m | Road to the town | Chamoli |
By tradition the circuit is done clockwise: Yamunotri first, then Gangotri, then Kedarnath and finally Badrinath. There is a practical reason too. Yamunotri and Gangotri lie in the western Uttarkashi valleys, Kedarnath in the central Mandakini valley and Badrinath in the eastern Alaknanda valley. Travelling in this order means you never double back across the mountains, and you finish closest to the road home through Devprayag and Rishikesh.
The road distances are long. From Haridwar the full circuit is roughly 1,250 km, much of it on winding hill roads where 30–40 km an hour is normal. That is why a comfortable road yatra takes nine nights from Haridwar and eleven from Delhi. The Char Dham route map shows every leg and night stop.
There is no single right way. Your choice depends on how many days you have, your budget and the fitness of the oldest person in your group.
2027 estimated starting prices per person; road prices are for a group of four on budget hotels.
Most families spend 10 days on the road from Haridwar, Rishikesh or Dehradun, or 12 days from Delhi. Here is a typical split of nights from Haridwar:
| Night stop | Nights | Why you stay there |
|---|---|---|
| Barkot | 2 | Base for the Yamunotri trek from Janki Chatti |
| Uttarkashi | 2 | Base for the day trip to Gangotri |
| Guptkashi / Sitapur | 2 | Before and after Kedarnath |
| Kedarnath | 1 | Darshan at dawn after the trek |
| Badrinath | 1 | Evening aarti and morning darshan |
| Rudraprayag / Srinagar | 1 | Breaks the long drive back to Haridwar |
| Package | Budget | Deluxe | Luxury |
|---|---|---|---|
| Char Dham 9N/10D from Haridwar | ₹21,500 | ₹32,500 | ₹49,500 |
| Char Dham 11N/12D from Delhi | ₹24,500 | ₹35,500 | ₹53,500 |
On top of the package you should budget for ponies or palkis if you will not walk, the Sonprayag–Gaurikund shared jeep, lunches, puja offerings and travel to the start city. Pony rates at Kedarnath were roughly ₹3,000–4,000 one way, and at Yamunotri about ₹1,000–1,500, but rates are fixed by the local administration and change each season. For the cheapest way to go, see cheapest Char Dham package.
With a few extra days you can add Hemkund Sahib, the Valley of Flowers or the Gaumukh glacier trek. See Char Dham with Hemkund Sahib and Char Dham with Gaumukh.
Dress modestly, follow the queue system at each temple, and respect photography rules inside the shrines. Keep plastic out of the rivers and the trekking paths. On the road, avoid driving after dark and stay flexible: a landslide can hold traffic for hours, and the best plan includes a spare half day.
