From the sand dunes of the Thar to the glaciers of Garhwal. Board a night train to Delhi, and twelve days later you return with darshan of all four Himalayan dhams.
Few journeys in India change the landscape as completely as Bikaner to the Char Dham. You leave a city of red sandstone havelis and dry summer heat, and within two days you are walking beside the cold Yamuna under pine forests. The contrast is part of the experience, but it also means planning clothing, health and timing a little more carefully than pilgrims from the plains of Uttarakhand.
Bikaner is roughly 450 km from Delhi and about 600 km from Haridwar. The easiest link is an overnight train to Delhi; you sleep through the night and meet our driver at the station in the morning. From there, the Char Dham Yatra package from Delhi takes 11 nights and 12 days and covers all four shrines with hotels, meals and a private vehicle.

Travelling from Bikaner to the start point
Overnight train to Delhi
Trains from Bikaner Junction to Delhi run through the night, which saves a hotel night and a day of leave. Arrive in Delhi early, have breakfast, and begin the drive to Haridwar by mid-morning. Book berths as early as you can for May, and for October when Diwali travel begins.
By road with your own group
Some Bikaner families prefer a door-to-door road trip. The drive to Haridwar via Hisar and the Haryana highways takes a long day. Since Bikaner is outside our usual pick-up range, a home pick-up is quoted on request and adds one day to the trip; most groups still find the train more restful for elders.
By air
Bikaner's Nal airport has limited flights. Jaipur and Delhi airports have more options. If you fly, the Char Dham Yatra by air page explains how to choose between Delhi and Dehradun.

Health and packing tips for travellers from the desert
Layer up. Bikaner can be above 40°C in May while Kedarnath dips close to 0°C at night. Pack thermals, a warm jacket, cap, gloves and woollen socks; our packing list helps.
Drink water often. Dry mountain air and altitude dehydrate quickly even when you do not feel thirsty.
Pick the right window. Mid-September to October is ideal for Bikaner families after the summer heat; read best time to visit.
Register in advance. Every traveller needs the free online registration; see our registration guide.
Helicopter seats. Kedarnath shuttle tickets are sold only on IRCTC HeliYatra. Read how online helicopter booking works and avoid fake sites.
