What a budget Char Dham package gives you

"Budget" on this site does not mean cutting corners on safety. Every budget trip uses the same route, the same experienced hill drivers and the same registration support as our costlier categories. What changes is the hotel: simple, clean rooms with attached bathrooms and hot water where the town has a reliable supply, rather than the best-rated property in each place.

There are four budget ways to do the yatra, and the right one depends mostly on how many of you are travelling. Solo pilgrims and couples save the most by taking a seat on a yatra coach or a fixed-departure group. Families of four or more get better value with a private car, and big groups of ten or twelve pay the lowest per-head price for a private trip by sharing a Tempo Traveller.

What budget hotels are like at each stop

Mountain towns have limited hotel stock, and in peak weeks every room is taken. Budget rooms are basic but clean. Expect a double or triple bed, attached bathroom, a geyser or bucket hot water, and a simple vegetarian dinner.

   Haridwar to Barkot

   210 km7–8 hoursNight: Barkot

   Depart Haridwar after breakfast for the climb through Dehradun and Mussoorie. Lunch at a roadside dhaba keeps costs down and the food is fresh. Reach Barkot by evening and settle in for two nights.

   Yamunotri

   45 km each way + 6 km trekFull dayNight: Barkot

   Drive to Janki Chatti and walk the 6 km to Yamunotri. Walking saves the pony fare of roughly ₹1,000–1,500 each way, but take one if you are unsure of your stamina. Return to Barkot for dinner.

   Barkot to Uttarkashi

   100 km4–5 hoursNight: Uttarkashi

   A short drive and a restful afternoon. Uttarkashi's markets are a good place to buy cheap woollen caps and gloves if you forgot them. Visit the Kashi Vishwanath temple in the evening.

   Gangotri

   100 km each way8–9 hoursNight: Uttarkashi

   No trek is needed today: the road reaches the temple town. Carry a bottle to take Gangajal home from the river. Return to Uttarkashi by evening.

   Uttarkashi to Guptkashi

   220 km8–9 hoursNight: Guptkashi / Sitapur

   A long day in the vehicle across to the Mandakini valley. Carry snacks and water from Uttarkashi, as hill-stop prices rise along the way. Repack for tomorrow's climb.

   Kedarnath trek

   30 km + 16 km trek7–9 hoursNight: Kedarnath

   From Sonprayag take the shared jeep to Gaurikund and walk to Kedarnath. Walking is free; a pony costs roughly ₹3,000–4,000 one way at rates set by the local administration. Stay at a guest house or tent near the temple.

   Kedarnath to Guptkashi

   16 km trek + 30 kmFull dayNight: Guptkashi

   Early darshan, then the descent to Gaurikund. Many pilgrims walk down even if they rode up, since the downhill is easier. Jeep to Sonprayag and drive to Guptkashi.

   Guptkashi to Badrinath

   200 km8–9 hoursNight: Badrinath

   Cross the hills via Ukhimath to Chamoli and Joshimath. Reach Badrinath in the afternoon and bathe at the free Tapt Kund hot springs. Attend the evening aarti.

   Badrinath to Rudraprayag

   160 km6–7 hoursNight: Rudraprayag / Srinagar

   Morning darshan, then a walk around Mana village, which costs nothing and is a highlight of the trip. Drive down to Rudraprayag or Srinagar. Overnight there.

    Return to Haridwar

    165 km6–7 hoursNight: Tour ends

    Drive via Devprayag and Rishikesh to Haridwar. Arrive by afternoon. Book an evening train home to avoid paying for an extra hotel night.

Ten honest ways to spend less

1. Travel in September or October. Hotels are easier to get and the weather is clear; see the best time to visit.
2. Fill the vehicle. Four people in a car pay far less each than two.
3. Share rooms three to a room. Triple sharing lowers the room cost per head.
4. Start in Haridwar, not Delhi. A train to Haridwar is cheaper than two extra days of car hire.
5. Walk where you can. The Yamunotri and Kedarnath trails are free on foot.
6. Take lunch at dhabas. Simple thalis are filling and inexpensive.
7. Register yourself. Yatra registration is free; never pay an agent for it. See registration.
8. Book helicopter seats only on IRCTC. Fake websites are a real risk; read the IRCTC guide.
9. Carry your own woollens and medicines. Buying them in the hills costs more.
