Four dhams from Haridwar
- Barkot, Uttarkashi, Guptkashi stays
- Kedarnath and Badrinath nights
- Private vehicle
The four shrines that make up the Char Dham Yatra, covered in a single ten-day road journey. People name Badrinath first, but the road runs the other way; here is why, and how the whole circuit fits together.
Each of the four dhams guards the source region of a sacred river. Yamunotri honours Goddess Yamuna, Gangotri Goddess Ganga, Kedarnath Lord Shiva on the Mandakini, and Badrinath Lord Vishnu on the Alaknanda. Visiting all four in one season has been a goal for Hindu pilgrims for centuries, and it is still the trip most of our guests mean when they say they want to do the Char Dham Yatra.
| Shrine | Deity | Altitude | How you reach it | District |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yamunotri | Goddess Yamuna | 3,293 m | 6 km trek from Janki Chatti | Uttarkashi |
| Gangotri | Goddess Ganga | 3,100 m | Road to the temple | Uttarkashi |
| Kedarnath | Lord Shiva (Jyotirlinga) | 3,583 m | 16 km trek from Gaurikund or helicopter | Rudraprayag |
| Badrinath | Lord Vishnu (Badri Narayan) | 3,133 m | Road to the town | Chamoli |
The search phrase lists Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, Yamunotri, but on the ground the yatra moves from west to east. Tradition holds that the circuit should be done clockwise, starting at Yamunotri and finishing with Badri Narayan. Geography agrees: the Yamuna valley is closest to Dehradun and Mussoorie, the Bhagirathi valley comes next, and the Mandakini and Alaknanda valleys lie further east.
If you only have time for part of the circuit, look at the Do Dham package for Kedarnath and Badrinath, or the Gangotri Yamunotri tour for the two western shrines. The route map shows how the four valleys connect.

Drive via Dehradun and Mussoorie, with a stop at Kempty Falls if the weather is kind. The road then drops into the Yamuna valley through pine forest. Barkot is a quiet market town and the usual base for Yamunotri.
Drive to Janki Chatti and walk or ride the 6 km path to the temple. Pilgrims cook rice in a cloth at the boiling Surya Kund and touch the Divya Shila before darshan of Yamuna Maa. Return to Janki Chatti and drive back to Barkot.
A shorter day across the ridge to the Bhagirathi valley. In Uttarkashi visit the old Kashi Vishwanath temple and the Shakti temple opposite. The afternoon is free to rest and repack.
Follow the Bhagirathi past the Gangnani hot spring and the apple orchards of Harsil to Gangotri. Take a dip in the river if you are brave, then darshan and a look at Bhagirath Shila, where King Bhagirath is said to have prayed. Drive back to Uttarkashi by evening.
The longest drive of the trip crosses from the Bhagirathi to the Mandakini via Tehri and Srinagar or the Ghansali road. You reach Guptkashi in the evening. Rest well; tomorrow is the big climb.
Drive to Sonprayag and take the shared jeep to Gaurikund. Walk, ride a pony or take a palki up the 16 km trail to the Jyotirlinga, or fly from a shuttle helipad if you hold IRCTC tickets. Evening aarti at the temple is unforgettable.
Morning darshan, then the Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi and Bhairavnath temple. Descend to Gaurikund, ride the jeep to Sonprayag and rejoin your driver for Guptkashi.
Drive over Ukhimath and the Chopta forests to Chamoli, then up the Alaknanda past Joshimath. Arrive in Badrinath, bathe at Tapt Kund and attend the evening aarti.
Complete the fourth darshan in the morning. Visit Brahma Kapal and the village of Mana, 3 km away, with Vyas Gufa and Bhim Pul. Drive down the valley past three of the Panch Prayag to your hotel.
Stop at Devprayag, where the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi join to form the Ganga, and so close the circle of the four rivers. Reach Haridwar by afternoon for your onward journey.
