Bengalis have always loved the Himalaya, and the Puja holidays fall in the best weeks of the Kedarnath–Badrinath season. Here is how to turn that break into a complete Do Dham journey.
For generations, families from Kolkata have used the autumn holidays to travel to the hills. That habit lines up perfectly with Uttarakhand: after the monsoon ends in September, the air over Kedarnath and Badrinath is at its clearest, the crowds of May have gone and the temples remain open until November. If your office or school closes for Durga Puja or Lakshmi Puja, those days are among the best of the year for this yatra.
Kolkata is roughly 1,500 km from Delhi. Many Bengali families take a long-distance train that runs towards Haridwar, which is why our featured plan starts there: 5 nights and 6 days from Haridwar station and back. Families who fly into Delhi join the 6N/7D Delhi plan instead. Either way, a private car and driver stay with you through the hills.

Day-wise plan from Haridwar
Day 1
Haridwar to Guptkashi
200 km7–8 hoursNight: Guptkashi
Step off the train and meet your driver at Haridwar station; if the train arrives late in the day, we start the next morning after a night in Haridwar. The road follows the Ganga past Rishikesh to Devprayag and then the Alaknanda to Rudraprayag. In autumn the valleys are green after the rains and the peaks sharp against a blue sky. Overnight in Guptkashi.
Day 2
Gaurikund to Kedarnath
30 km + 16 kmFull dayNight: Kedarnath
Drive to Sonprayag, take the shared jeep to Gaurikund and begin the climb. October days are crisp and bright on the trail, with fewer pilgrims than in summer. Pony, palki and pithoo are available, and IRCTC helicopter passengers fly from Phata, Sersi or Guptkashi. Wrap up warmly for the evening aarti.

Day 3
Darshan, return to Guptkashi
16 km + 30 kmFull dayNight: Guptkashi
Dawn darshan in autumn can feel almost private compared with the summer rush. Visit Bhairavnath and the Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi, then descend. Your car waits at Sonprayag.
Day 4
Guptkashi to Badrinath
200 km8–9 hoursNight: Badrinath
The road crosses through Ukhimath and the Chopta forests, which turn gold and red in late October. Drop to Chamoli and follow the Alaknanda up past Joshimath. Badrinath evenings are cold in autumn, so the Tapt Kund's warm water is a treat.
Day 5
Badrinath and Mana
About 160 km6–7 hoursNight: Rudraprayag
Take darshan of Badri Narayan, then walk around Mana village for Vyas Gufa, Ganesh Gufa and Bhim Pul. In autumn the Neelkanth peak above Badrinath is often clear all morning. Afternoon drive to Rudraprayag.
Day 6
Rudraprayag to Haridwar
165 km6–7 hoursNight: Tour ends
Drive back down the valley to Haridwar. There is time for the evening aarti before your train to Kolkata, or we can drop you at Dehradun airport. Leave a buffer if your train departs early in the afternoon.
If you fly to Delhi instead
Flights from Kolkata to Delhi take a little over two hours and run all day, so flying turns a three-day rail round trip into a few hours each way. The tour then becomes 6 nights and 7 days. Day 1 is the 230 km drive from Delhi to Haridwar with an evening at the ghats, days 2 to 6 follow the route above, and the last day is a long drive of about 360 km from Srinagar Garhwal back to Delhi. Book the flight home for the next morning if you can, because mountain traffic is hard to predict.
Very short on time? The Do Dham helicopter charter from Dehradun covers both shrines in 1 night and 2 days, estimated at ₹1,25,000 per person. For a road trip with only the Kedarnath leg in the air, try for IRCTC shuttle tickets; the Phata round trip was ₹6,500 in 2026.

Tips for Bengali travellers
Puja holiday timing
Durga Puja usually falls between late September and late October, which is ideal. If your break is near Diwali, remember Kedarnath closes on Bhai Dooj; check the opening and closing dates and plan darshan before then.
Food
Kedarnath and Badrinath are vegetarian towns, and most hotels on the route serve vegetarian food only. Rice and dal are easy to find; fish is not. Pack familiar snacks for the trek.
Warm clothing
Autumn nights at both shrines can drop below freezing. Bring thermals, a down jacket, gloves and a woollen cap. Our packing list covers the rest.
Registration and helicopter
Complete the free registration for every traveller. Kedarnath shuttle seats are sold only on IRCTC HeliYatra; read the IRCTC guide and avoid unofficial sellers.

Kolkata to Kedarnath and Badrinath: FAQ
Is the Puja holiday a good time for Kedarnath and Badrinath?
Yes. Late September and October bring clear skies after the monsoon, cool days and shorter queues. Nights are cold, so pack well.
Should Kolkata pilgrims take the train to Haridwar or to Delhi?
Some long-distance trains run from Howrah towards Haridwar and Dehradun. Schedules change, so check IRCTC. If you arrive in Delhi instead, we start from there.
How long does the whole trip take from Kolkata?
By train via Haridwar, about nine to ten days door to door. By air via Delhi, about eight days.
Will we get non-vegetarian food?
Both shrine towns and most hotels on the route are vegetarian. Some towns lower down have non-vegetarian dhabas, but we recommend staying vegetarian for the yatra.
