Kedarnath by Car, 3N/4D
- Shortest road plan
- Guptkashi and Kedarnath stays
- Car waits at Sonprayag
Your own vehicle and a driver who knows the Mandakini road: stop where you like, leave before dawn, and keep the family together from the plains to the start of the trek at Sonprayag.
This is the first thing most families ask, and the answer surprises many: a car takes you to Sonprayag, not to the temple. Private vehicles are parked at Sonprayag, a shared jeep covers the 5 km to Gaurikund, and the last 16 km to Kedarnath is on foot, pony, palki or, from the helipads lower down, by shuttle helicopter. So a Kedarnath trip by car is really a road journey to the foot of the mountain plus one of the most famous walks in India.
Even so, the car matters a great deal. The drive from Haridwar is about 230 km of hill road each way, from Delhi nearly twice that, and you will spend more hours in the vehicle than on the trek. A comfortable seat, a careful driver and the freedom to set off at 4 am, when the Sonprayag queues are short, make the difference between a draining trip and a good one. That is what our Kedarnath yatra packages are built around.
Every vehicle comes with a driver who has worked the Garhwal routes before; self-drive rentals are not something we offer for the yatra. Pick by group size and luggage first, then comfort.
| Vehicle | Seats (plus driver) | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Swift Dzire (sedan) | 4 | 2 medium bags | Couples or three adults travelling light |
| Maruti Ertiga | 6 | 3–4 bags with roof carrier | Small families on a budget |
| Toyota Innova Crysta | 6–7 | 4–5 bags | Families with elders; the most comfortable on bends |
| Tempo Traveller | 12 or 17 | Rear luggage area | Extended families, temple groups, office teams |
For a full Char Dham circuit, our listed 10-day vehicle rates run from ₹38,000 for a Dzire to ₹58,000 for an Innova Crysta and ₹78,000 for a 12-seat Tempo Traveller; for six-day Do Dham trips they start at ₹24,000. A Kedarnath-only booking is shorter, so vehicle-only hire is quoted on request for your exact dates. Most guests prefer the complete package below, where hotels are included. Larger groups can read about Tempo Traveller hire from Haridwar and our Innova Crysta bookings.
| Start city | Duration | Budget | Deluxe | Luxury |

Here is how the drive breaks down from Delhi, the most common starting point for road trips. From Haridwar, drop day 1 and come back the same way you went up.
Your car collects you from home anywhere in Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad or Faridabad. The expressway and highway run through Meerut and Muzaffarnagar, with dhaba stops along the way. Reach Haridwar by afternoon, check in, and walk to Har Ki Pauri for the evening aarti.
This is the real mountain drive, with steady climbs and countless bends above the Ganga and Alaknanda. Your driver keeps a gentle pace for anyone prone to motion sickness and stops at Devprayag and Rudraprayag. Guptkashi arrives by late afternoon, leaving time to rest and pack a light daypack for the trek.
The car drops you at Sonprayag in the early morning and waits there, or returns to Guptkashi, while you are on the mountain. A shared jeep takes you to Gaurikund and the trek begins. Spend the evening at the temple and sleep at Kedarnath.
Take darshan before dawn and walk down after breakfast. Your driver meets you at Sonprayag, usually by early afternoon, and you drive down the valley to Rudraprayag or Srinagar Garhwal. Stopping here rather than Guptkashi shortens the final day considerably.
A long but easy day: hill road down to Rishikesh and Haridwar, then the plains highway to Delhi. Leave early to clear the hills by midday, have lunch near Haridwar, and expect to reach home by evening.
Sonprayag has large parking areas, but they fill fast in May and June, so plan around the opening dates and the season peak. Arriving before 6 am saves time both in parking and in the shared jeep queue. Your driver handles parking fees, which are included in the package.
Hill driving after dark is tiring and risky, and we avoid it throughout the yatra season. Our itineraries are timed to reach each night stop before sunset, and we will not push a driver to make up lost hours at night.
The Rudraprayag–Gaurikund road is prone to slides after heavy rain, especially in July and August. A hold can last an hour or a day. Keep a buffer day in your return travel if you are visiting in the monsoon, and read our do's and don'ts before leaving.
Private cars from other states can drive the route, but plains drivers often find the steep, narrow sections stressful, and you will still need to park at Sonprayag. Hiring a local driver for the hill sections is worth considering. Remember that every passenger needs the free yatra registration, and that shuttle seats from the Phata, Sersi and Guptkashi helipads are sold only on IRCTC HeliYatra, never by taxi operators or agents; see Kedarnath helicopter booking on IRCTC.
No. Vehicles stop at Sonprayag. A shared jeep runs 5 km to Gaurikund, and from there it is a 16 km trek, pony or palki ride to the temple.
An Innova Crysta is the most comfortable for families of five or six. A Dzire works well for two or three people with light bags, and a Tempo Traveller suits groups of 10 or more.
Drivers usually wait near Sonprayag or return to the Guptkashi hotel and come back to pick you up. Their stay and food are included in the driver allowance.
About 460 km. We split it over two days with a night in Haridwar, because driving it in one go means arriving after dark in the mountains.
The highway is well used and widened in many places, but slides can occur in heavy rain. Experienced hill drivers, daylight travel and avoiding July–August keep the risk low.
Yes. Adding two nights turns the trip into the Do Dham Yatra by car, which includes Badrinath and Mana village.
Yes, vehicle-only bookings are possible; we quote them for your dates and vehicle. Many guests still book Kedarnath rooms through us because they sell out early.
Share your dates and group size. We reply with a day-wise plan and quote.
